The Ashes will be retained by the Poms.
What a disastrous start to the 2nd test for the beleagured Aussies. Anderson is on fire having claimed 3/18 as the bewildered hosts wonder what comes next. 96/4 in the 30th.

Surely the yanks would be scratching their collective heads and proclaiming WTF? As they struggle to comprehend something beyond their shores!

Let me translate that into American for you.

The Australins are playing a game called cricket against their arch rivals, England.

In the second game of five, the Australians are 4 down (out of a possible ten) for only 96 home runs. In the last game in the second innings, England scored over 500 hundred home runs with one down to humilate the Australians, but ultimely tie the game - ran out of time (after only five days continuous play).

If England tie or win the "world series" they retain a trophy called the ashes. Simple, eh?

Of course you thought I didn't detect the subtle humour there, sackandcloth, but you have to get up earlier than that to hoodwink a pom! :)
Pom, as the story goes, to refer to the raw English Immigrants whose face went as red as Pommes (french for apple, in the hot Aussie sun)

Ah, Dervish, you are obviously uneducated in the subtle craft of the game of cricket. Baseball is a poor man's version of the game. There is plenty of excitement in test cricket; I once saw a seagull hit by the ball and explode in mid-air and a player wearing white suddenly hit with an explosive case of diahorrea! Whaddya mean no excitement!

E aí cara, tudo beleza comigo! E contigo?

Re: The Ashes will be retained by the Poms.
Here is the excitement of one spell from one of the English pitchers, with subtitles for Americans.

Capacity crowd at the Adelaide Oval, bright and sunny, some boozy picnics (slightly drunk) going down (happening)on the bank (hill), lovely scene.

35.1
Swann to Hussey, (he pitches and nothing happens) no run, smart work from Cook at short leg cuts off Hussey's flick (the fielding side get the ball and no one advances any bases)

35.2
Swann to Hussey, no run, punched off the back foot firmly but straight to short cover (again nothing happened, the fileding side prevented anyone stealing a base)

35.3
Swann to Hussey, no run, this time Hussey stretches forward to defend. Swann doing a good, economical job which is doubly important with Finn going for a few. (WOW! It's all happening here, again, nothing happens)

35.4
Swann to Hussey, no run, pushed back to the bowler who fields with a tumble. (the crowd are on their feet as again nothing happens)

35.5
Swann to Hussey, FOUR, lovely shot, Hussey skips down the wicket, finds it on the half-volley and with a flick of the wrists sends it back past the bowler for four(But wait what's this??? Four home runs and the Aussies are burning around the bases -all two of them)

35.6
Swann to Hussey, no run, having taken a single boundary a tight over becomes a good one for Australia and Hussey happy to defend (ooh, I can't contain my excitement here, as again, nothing happens)

As can be seen, cricket is the pinnacle of excitement!

Well, at the drinks interval, it's Australia slowly advancing with 129 home runs with four down after 43 pitchers!

It's a bundle of excitement here, I believe the camera just picked up someone yawning!

But wait! What's that? The cameraman has found a blonde with big tits and a skimpy top. Certainly cause for a Mexican wave as the crowd erupts!

Re: The Ashes will be retained by the Poms.
James Anderson reduced Australia to their worst start to a Test innings in 60 years and despite a stirring fightback from Michael Hussey, England remained well on top after the opening day in Adelaide. Few venues in the world are kinder to batsmen than Adelaide Oval, and after winning the toss on a 34-degree day, for Australia to be dismissed for 245 before stumps was not only sub-par, it was potentially ruinous.

yay, go the poms

After a hiccough at the start of the day's play, when Strauss inadvisably left alone a ball that subsequently took his bail, it has been all England.

They have gone to tea at 55 for 1 after some shoddy fielding from the Aussies has let the game slip away from them.

Shhhh! This isn't India and Pakistan or even South Africa and Kenya we're talking about. Only those countries fix sporting events, right? Right?

Hey there ashesand sackcloth, thanks for the support.

Ha ha ha, just laughing to myself. I was wondering what sal good meant and then I spoke it aloud and saw the light!

In this case I am like Fox Mulder; I want to believe! Plus I don't think the beady eyed captain of the Aussie team is that good an actor. :)

Well it's another exciting day in Adelaide. It looks like England are trying to bore the Australians to death.

The last 10 overs have yielded an average of only 1.8 per over.

5.10pm stumps Right, that's it for the day. Another punishing day for the hosts, the only thing that went their way was the rain at tea. Pietersen was majestic, but the sting had long since departed from the attack by the time he exploded. Play will start 30 minutes early tomorrow to make up for some of the lost time. For now check out Brydon's bulletin, thanks for all the emails, that's all from us.
End of over 143 (14 runs) England 551/4
KP Pietersen 213* (296b 31x4 1x6) XJ Doherty 24-3-120-0
IR Bell 41* (76b 6x4) DE Bollinger 27-1-121-1
