Why are the moderately rich more stuck up than the ultra-wealthy???
Every small business owner I know who has maybe $1-5 million net worth is incredibly snobby and has a HUGE ego. They act like kings and are so proud of themselves. They treat their employees like shit and drive nice BMWs and Mercedes and make a point to brag about their material wealth to everyone they know.

Yet I work right under the CFO of a major corporation (which will remain nameless) and both him and the CEO are as down to Earth as you can get. Super friendly guys, they are each worth over $100 million but you wouldn't know it just by talking to them. They also live in a nice area of town and drive nice cars, but they don't brag about it or rub it in everyone's face.

Why is that?

It would be funny if they were not able to pay themselves, then they would really bitch. I just tell ppl who are "new money" to get over themselves. They don't realize they could always lose everything overnight and have to lay off their employees and close up shop.

+1

Also since old money has never known anything else, they don't think about it much. It's what is normal for them.

New money is very concerned with being seen as "legitimate" in some social circles. Old money is just concerned with not touching the principal.

They come in all ranges of personality...the millionaire that worked hard and was smart with his money will most likely be a down to Earth good person, and you couldn't pick him out of a crowd...In fact the middle class would typically look more wealthy because they finance their lifestyle with loans and credit cards whereas the wealthy don't...

making money tends to amplify certain existing personality traits in a person...whereas the type who humbles themselves after early setbacks will often make some kind of promise- "if i ever make millions, i'll never let it go to my head". these people tend to be happier too.

I've worked for a number of small business owners in the past; they all have lousy ego, are self-centered and some are downright obnoxious.

I found a few things in common: none of them has professional qualifications, they cannot write a proper business letter, and they're small-timers who behave like big shots in business.

I know exactly what the OP is talking about, and it's uncanny that this thread comes up, as I was just thinking about this topic. OP is right on

Here's my take on it: old money has been coached and schooled (though I like to use the word programmed) on how to act and how NOT to act within social circles. It is a form of mind control that they undergo on how to conduct themselves. They know that, if they deviate from their socially accepted norms, they will be ostracized within their networking community. And this, for them, equals death.
