i reckon it worked just fine.

my grandmother used to tell this story, where a woman from the neighborhood one day started to weep standing in line at the bakery; apparently her son had written her a "feldpost" letter from the front begging her to please send him some bread because, he wrote, "we are starving here". somebody among the customers must have been a member of the equivalent of you "see sth, hear sth" campaign - because the
next day she was picked up the by the "schutzstaffel" (special police force) and tried and found guilty of "wehrkraftzersetzung" (roughly 'undermining the fighting spirit of the common man'), a crime which was punishable by death at the time.

after the war, i believe this particular crime was dropped from the criminal code here in germany ;)

but i keep hearing some of your senators really want to reactivate it for use on mr. assange, eh?
