Quoting: Old TroutNo that was last year that brought a foot of snow in Dallas, Texas which was a record. It's La Nina which has the opposite effect for me. Very dry and mild weather. Big emphasis on very dry. No idea how La Nina affect your area. La Nina means the Pacific Ocean is cooler than average. El Nino means warmer than average in Pacific Ocean. It influences the pattern of jet stream. Our weather people are blaming our weather on a large la nina this year. Makes sense |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1200003Hmm So warming good Cooling bad? Sweden in 'coldest December in 100 years' [link to www.thelocal.se] OPs weather prediction appears right on, but the cause is suspect. The "warming" argument seems a bit hollow does it not? And surrendering terminology on that account to something called "change' is unsubstancial. So shouldn't the fuss be in the opposite direction, fear of cold? Damage to food supply would be dramatic, whereas the supposed "warming" would do the opposite- increase the food supply. Food and warmth are the most important possession of humankind. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10345930 Ouch! I dont know that you can make that observation -- people have warm and kind hearts no matter where they live !!. However I do have a feeling that killing heartlessly can affect weather... Always thought that the Aztecs wipeout might have had something to do with their ripping out of hearts of children and sacrificing them on the alters - as appeasement to the GODS. There are natural laws of LIFE which when corrupted have a fatal response for the perpetrators.... |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1089698 United Kingdom 12/20/2010 09:00 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | For those who call Doom whenever UK weather breaks another record, here is a list of records maintained by the UK Met Office: Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1199661[link to www.metoffice.gov.uk] Note that weather extremes, in both directions, seem to happen a lot within the last 50-60 years. But there is a statistical bias here. The Met Office was only founded in 1854, and although there are good records from before then, they are patchy both in time and geographical coverage. In fact, thorough coverage only dates from the late 19th century. So, given let's say only a mere 120-150 years of exact data, it's entirely likely that record-breakers will cluster towards the end of the time scale, especially when there are that many records to break once you look at things on a monthly level. (Broken records mean nothing. It's long-term temperature trends that are meaningful and those, overall, show that the UK is warming.) Does this also follow for long term Artic/Antartic ice melt/buildup? That's exactly my point. Any rational assessment of icemelt depends on looking at long-term trends, not outliers like record breaking - and local - cold/warm spells (that's weather, not climate). The results are currently controversial in terms of how rapidly icesheets are melting, huge 'error bars', but the general scientific consensus is that they are. I'm not a fanatic about climate change, but I'd put my money on the broad consensus (while reserving the right to quibble about the details). |
