can you tow a car that is in park?
I have an interlock device that locked the ignition out. Your supposed to tow the car in that situation to the interlock guys but I just called AAA and they said they can't tow a car in park. Now what the fuck am I supposed to do? What the hell do the towing trucks do that tow illegally parked cars...obviously they aren't in neutral.

Several different ways that it can be done. The easiest though is to call up a towing company that has a big enough flatdeck to hoist the hole car up onto the deck.

Rent a car dolly. Figure out which wheels are free spinning. Front wheels on rear-wheel drive vehicles, rear wheels on front-wheel drive vehicles. Use a winch or a come-along to pull the drive wheels onto the dolly, leaving the free spinning wheels on the road. Off you go! Getting the vehicle off is a little trickier, but they should be able to help you at the shop.

If the ignition is locked it sounds like you still can get in the car - can't you put it in neutral? Or does the interlock thing prevent that?

I'm no expert, but I thought that a car is towed from the opposite way...meaning if it is front wheel drive it is towed from the front so the front tires are off the ground? It is possible that the AAA tow company called has the trucks that you pull the car up onto the bed. with those type the car has to be in neutral to pull it up, but still, I thought that old fashioned type with a whench only can do so in park....good luck with that.

Yes, set the e-brake, get a long chain, 50' or so, hook it around you radiator,, tie rod end, power steering pump, or similar, back up with the tow vehicle so there is lots of slack, and floor the accelerator- to get as much speed as possible before the weight of the car being towed has an affect on your momentum. It helps to have someone in the tow vehicle stand on the brakes as hard as they can also......

There is usually a button or switch that they can hit to get the car in neutral. What is the Year, make and model of your car.

Re: can you tow a car that is in park?
Im so tired of these tow truck driver shows on tv where they go around towing innocent peoples cars for dumb shit like parking in an illegal spot for 5 mins when the sign isnt even there... The more i watch these shows, it makes me want to become a driver and tow one of their cars so they can see how it feels... they are dicks and they will get their karma. But they really are the lowest scum on earth. Only people that open up towing companies are people who cant make an honest living. They are total losers and fatties..

Yup, on my car I have a small plastic pieve covering an opening by the stick that contains some kind of button/lock to unlock the gearbox for towing purposes.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1172958

Depends on how it is done. In general this applies to a car being towed by another car with a rope/cable.

My manual states that my automatic gearbox can be towed (in neutral) for very short distances, at very low speed. I don't remember the actual numbers, but it was something like 3-4 miles at a maximum velocity of 15mph or something like that.

If your automatic is being towed by a professional he should know how to do it properly.

Re: can you tow a car that is in park?
No. It is now impossible to move your vehicle in any way. If you are lucky, local authorities will buy it off you and turn it into a "modern art" sculpture. Otherwise, they will cover it in parking tickets until it looks like a giant pile of parking tickets.

Yes, easiest solution. And also the only practical solution for 4WD cars.

Off you go! Re: can you tow a car that is in park?
If it is a rear wheel drive, you lift the rear. If it a front wheel drive, you lift the front. Park only affects the driven wheels. The only time you cant really use a wheel lift is on a full time four wheel drive. Most drivers won't pull a parked car up on a rollback because they are damn hard to get back off.

Re: can you tow a car that is in park?
Skates, lets the car slide just about anywhere.

If its a standard transmission, there are ways to pop the linkage to disengage the transmission to allow for towing. Some automatics have this as well.
