How much is a dollar?

The current "official" silver dollar in the US is the American Silver Eagle. It's minted by the US Mint, and has "$1" stamped on it.

[link to secure.wikimedia.org (secure)]

If you go to the US Mint's website, all they will sell you is a "collector" version of a "silver dollar" for $45.95

[link to catalog.usmint.gov]

But if you don't want a collector piece, then you'll have to go elsewhere to find it for a more reasonable price.

For example, if you go to Apmex [link to www.apmex.com]

You can get them today for $32.79 each. Now they are technically pure silver bullion and not official 90% silver "currency coin" strictly speaking, but they are minted by the gov't, and they do have the "$1" stamped on them, so they are as close as you will get today to a Bouvier's Law Dictionary-defined one dollar coin, discounting older collectible silver dollars.

So an answer to 'just how much is a dollar' is around $32.79 today in federal reserve, inc. debt notes.

It'll cost more tomorrow. You can thank Helicopter Ben and his masters on Wall St. for that.

There is a "silver eagles dollar" with 1 ounce of silver.

Or, there is the one dollar coins with no silver that you can get at the bank.

The United States Mint produces circulating coins in six denominations: one cent (penny), five cents (nickel), ten cents (dime), twenty-five cents (quarter dollar), fifty cents (half-dollar), and one dollar.

The one ounce CIRCULATING silver is minted primarily for trade purposes and sold to certain dealers only. You cannot buy these directly from the mint but rather through a middleman. The COLLECTORS version is sold through the Mint directly and is a PROOF coin which garners a huge premium because it's production is very limited. The problem is most bullion dealers will quote you the CIRCULATING price for PROOFS if you try and to sell them.
