~ MOON TILT 90 DEGREES IN 8 HOURS-? ~

Funny my girlfriend noticed it last night too. I haven't payed much attention to it during my life but wasn't the shadow on the moon always vertical it's horizontal now not perfectly but damn near. Is this just due to the tilt of the earth this time of the year?

Just wondering.

Yes, and it's perfectly normal. The moon (and everything else in the sky) appears to rotate 360 degrees ever 24 hours. Over the course of 6 hours, everything appears to rotate approximately 90 degrees.

Haven't you ever seen time exposures of the northern sky at night showing the sky rotating?

Then you and your mom aren't too observant; the moon has always done that along with everything else in the sky.

It's called field rotation, and yes, it's normal and expected. This is why you have to polar mount a telescope to do long exposure photography; viewing objects in an altitude-azimuth way shows field rotation. You can see this in constellations too; Orion looks like he's resting on his right side (our left) as he rises and he looks like he's resting on his left side (our right) as he sets.

The moon isn't tilting 90 degrees in 8 hours.

We've seen the moon through the whole winter - we do not have sunlight for 2 months.

I get this from 15 years experience in astronomy. Astrophotography has ALWAYS required accurate polar alignment to avoid field rotation. This is not something new, and it's not a conspiracy. This is astrophotography 101.
