~ MOON TILT 90 DEGREES IN 8 HOURS-? ~ | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1179188 Norway 12/14/2010 04:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Funny my girlfriend noticed it last night too. I haven't payed much attention to it during my life but wasn't the shadow on the moon always vertical it's horizontal now not perfectly but damn near. Is this just due to the tilt of the earth this time of the year? Quoting: AstronutJust wondering. I've NEVER seen the moon "tilted" until last winter...looks totally strange sometimes, almost as you describe. [link to www.stellarium.org] Download it and learn how the waxing moon appears from an alt-az perspective as it rises, transits the meridian, and sets. Then compare it to the real sky. You don't understand: I've seen the moon clearly ever since childhood (I'm 44), and I live far up north where we have a "dark time" for 2 whole months. II KNOW how MY moon is supposed to be!!! So does my old mom - she sees the difference too..! Stellarium - hah! - I do not trust anything developed by anyone named Gates..! Free software - why.?!.it must have been expencive to create and maintain.. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 991880 United States 12/14/2010 04:21 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Check the section on telescope mounts to understand why the moon, and everything else in the sky, appears to rotate as it crosses the sky... [link to www.astronomyasylum.com] It's called field rotation and is perfectly normal. |

How could the moon, or the constellations, NOT appear to ROTATE as the sphere we're standing on rotates? |

Most will not because knowing is not important to them. Takes pics often and at different times. I have and what you can see will blow you away.... Many will dismiss it, the glancers and the indoor on the computer observers have no clue what is really happening around the moon. Don't take my word for it. Find out yourself if your interested. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 991880 United States 12/14/2010 04:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Whatever you say - the moon does NOT look right..! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1179188I see it, my mom sees it, and my 12 year old son noticed that patterns on the Moon have changed - they've moved. When the moon rises in the east, which direction is it's north pointing (which is essentially parallel to the earth's north)...over which of your shoulders? When it's high in the southern sky, which way is it's north pointing? Then, when it's in the west, which way is its north pointing...over which of your shoulders? Answer these questions and you'll realize why you're wrong. |

The moon (and everything else in the sky) appears to rotate 360 degrees ever 24 hours. Over the course of 6 hours, everything appears to rotate approximately 90 degrees. Haven't you ever seen time exposures of the northern sky at night showing the sky rotating? |

We created bogus astronomical software and offered it for free, but that didn’t fool you. We’ve paid off and threatened tens of thousands of amateur and professional astronomers from across the globe to no avail. We’ve edited thousands of library and text books…we’ve changed vast amounts of information on the internet...we even created ancient folklore and still we were unable to fool you and your elderly mother. We bow to your intellect and unmatched observational skills…you have beaten us my friend. The bad news is………………now we have to kill you. Sorry. |

I've seen it for more than 40 years - my mom for almost 80. Let me tell you something: When we from "up north" go for vacation in the south - like Turkey - THEN we see a tilted Moon...but not at home..! |

spacemore User ID: 1188653 United Kingdom 12/14/2010 04:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It's called field rotation, and yes, it's normal and expected. This is why you have to polar mount a telescope to do long exposure photography; viewing objects in an altitude-azimuth way shows field rotation. You can see this in constellations too; Orion looks like he's resting on his right side (our left) as he rises and he looks like he's resting on his left side (our right) as he sets. Quoting: Astronutfield rotation......... you get this from some goverment website. |

It's always amazing to me how some people reach adulthood and have never noticed this before...and when they do, they are so arrogant as to claim that they alone have observed something that is "new"....when it is their own sheer ignorance of the sky that is being demonstrated. |
