I think in very general terms, is that he came in too low, and that led to a turn or two that put the plane into the trees, and subsequently crash.

There was an amazing set of photos and analysis by a freelance photographer but I cannot find it!! He laid out the topography of the crash site and everything. From what happened, it is very plausible the actions of the pilot were due to being fooled into thinking he had reached the runway outer markers / lights.

Someone clean that up if my memory has failed..
