Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1144869Have you had any paranormal activity in the house? not sure both of us have experienced odd things sleeping stuff like dream paralysis, etc. the breaking glass sounded like someone took a sledge hammer and smashed into it |

BTW, I hate glass shower doors! What are they good for? You just have to squeegee and clean them all the time. Useless. I always uses shower curtains that I can wash or throw away. |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 1132775 United States 12/16/2010 12:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You said it was glass. Quoting: J-RicoIs it like "glass" glass or just tempered glass or 5 foot thick glass? How close to a window is your shower door? tempered about 1/3 inch thick and it is a high end brand door. the window is in the stall solid my first thought was someone threw something in the window but the window was fine our alarm was not set or it would have gone off with the glass break detectors |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1099279 United Kingdom 12/16/2010 12:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Probably faulty manufacture. Streess is induced at the suspension points and can start to develop hairline cracks. When one of these cracks reaches a tempering stress cell (the samll pieces of crumb glass you get left with all over the floor) it will propagate explosively through the whole sheet. Boom and doom in one go. I've had this happen on tempered glass in a greenhouse roof. (glazing strips were overtightened). Makes a hell of a mess |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 1132775 United States 12/16/2010 12:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Tempered glass is designed to shatter on impact. Sometimes very small flaws in the pane can cause the whole thing to go. It was probably a tiny crack that widened every time you used the door... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1178440that is probably what happened and could have been the popping sounds. |

The tiniest crack and it will shatter. Thank god it wasnt a 55 gallon tempered glass fishtank. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 811104 United States 12/16/2010 12:38 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | tempered glass is easily broken when the edges of the glass are damaged or chipped. Most likely the there is was something in the door frame that hit the edge of the glass or slowly chipped away at it over time and caused it to explode. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1197242 United States 12/16/2010 12:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | do you have a cold draft and alternation of heat and cold over time that can travel down a vent ? it probably had fissures in it that are like how a windshield to a car has cracks that grew over time and a verity of situations could stimulate it to crack. id go with thick plastic if you are a snowy place with bad insulation. or get the wall insulated around the shower and have someone do a vent inspection. could also be that the rollers caused the crack so if you can prove they and you have a guaranty you may be able to replace them if they are the cause of the cracks. |

Cannabisaurus Rex User ID: 1196934 United States 12/16/2010 12:43 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | That's why having sex in a stand up shower all the time isn't recommended. Often times couples bump into the glass and in time, weaken it. Hope you learned your lesson ;) Quoting: Anonymous Coward 837852Only if she has big weapons of mass distraction. "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its own victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than omnipotent moral busy-bodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -- C.S. Quoting: juniperothat is probably what happened and could have been the popping sounds. Yep, that's why I asked if it was tempered and how wide. Most likely what happened. It could have been a combination of that and a colder than usual temperature that could have done it in finally. Don't know where you live, so I'm just guessing.
