Psychoacoustics -- Basso Profundo and other Low Frequency Noises
Psychoacoustics is the scientific study of sound perception. More specifically, it is the branch of science studying the psychological and physiological responses associated with sound (including speech and music). It can be further categorized as a branch of Psychophysics.

Hearing is not a purely mechanical phenomenon of wave propagation, but is also a sensory and perceptual event; in other words, when a person hears something, that something arrives at the ear as a mechanical sound wave traveling through the air, but within the ear it is transformed into neural action potentials. These nerve pulses then travel to the brain where they are perceived. Hence, in many problems in acoustics, such as for audio processing, it is advantageous to take into account not just the mechanics of the environment, but also the fact that both the ear and the brain are involved in a person’s listening experience.

The inner ear, for example, does significant signal processing in converting sound waveforms into neural stimulus, so certain differences between waveforms may be imperceptible.[1] Audio compression techniques, such as MP3, make use of this fact.[2] In addition, the ear has a nonlinear response to sounds of different loudness levels. Telephone networks and audio noise reduction systems make use of this fact by nonlinearly compressing data samples before transmission, and then expanding them for playback.[3] Another effect of the ear's nonlinear response is that sounds that are close in frequency produce phantom beat notes, or intermodulation distortion products.

Limits of perception
An equal-loudness contour. Note peak sensitivity between 2khz and 4khz, the frequency around which the human voice centers

The human ear can nominally hear sounds in the range 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz (20 kHz). This upper limit tends to decrease with age, most adults being unable to hear above 16 kHz. The ear itself does not respond to frequencies below 20 Hz, but these can be perceived via the body's sense of touch.

---
Infrasound is sound that is lower in frequency than 20 Hz (Hertz) or cycles per second, the "normal" limit of human hearing. Hearing becomes gradually less sensitive as frequency decreases, so for humans to perceive infrasound, the sound pressure must be sufficiently high. The ear is the primary organ for sensing infrasound, but at higher levels it is possible to feel infrasound vibrations in various parts of the body.

The study of such sound waves is sometimes referred to as infrasonics, covering sounds beneath 20 Hz down to 0.001 Hz. This frequency range is utilized for monitoring earthquakes, charting rock and petroleum formations below the earth, and also in ballistocardiography and seismocardiography to study the mechanics of the heart. Infrasound is characterized by an ability to cover long distances and get around obstacles with little dissipation.

how do these sounds make you "feel" and why?

This is a fascinating subject. Years ago I was in a recording studio where they had set up a system for creating sounds from 1 Hz up to beyond our ability to discern. You could even see the huge speaker cone moving in and out once a second.

There are visceral physiological responses to low frequency sounds that resonate with body cavities, and they sometimes lead to emotional responses.

Thanks for the thread!

There's more than one way to generate a low frequency, too. You can take two sound sources that differ slightly in frequency, and you will "hear" (more likely feel) the low frequency vibrations.

Think about sitting in the back of a plane when the two engines are turning at slightly different frequencies. You'll feel a pulsating low frequency (called beat frequency).

this is the part that i find intriguing. we not only hear sounds, but when the ears cannot function, we do not cease to sense the sound. there are other functions at play. these functions work on sensory perceptions. we don't pay attention to them enough.

What's interesting is that while we perceive sounds as combinations of frequencies, they are generated and transmitted as waveforms. It's our brain that converts the waveforms into event-driven spectra.

Also, most of our musical instruments generate "one-dimensional" sounds, that is sounds whose fundamental and equally spaced harmonics are controlled by one dimension: the length of a violin string for example.

The notable exceptions are percussion instruments which generate "two-dimensional" sounds, e.g., the head of a tympani. The harmonics of these are not equally spaced, so they affect us differently.

There is also the possibility of three-dimensional and higher-dimensional sounds, but I don't know of any occuring naturally.

Remember this story ?

Sony Corporation has successfully patented a technique for creating games where you can smell, taste and touch what's around you.

Here's the sciencey bit: ultrasonic pulses are beamed at certain areas of the brain to transmit sensory information, creating "sensory experiences" - including aromas, sounds and images - for the brain's owner.

The patent, which was awarded to Sony researcher Thomas Dawson, states that "The pulsed ultrasonic signal alters the neural timing in the cortex," if that means anything to you.

Don't worry though, Sony aren't after sticking microchips in our heads just yet: "No invasive surgery is needed", apparently. Shame.

The technique could also be used to help blind and deaf people "to view live and/or recorded images or hear sounds," the patent stated.

Speaking to New Scientist magazine, neuroscientist Niels Birbaumer said he had examined Sony's patent and "found it plausible". Birbaumer works at the University of Tuebingen in Germany and has himself invented a machine that reads brain waves, enabling disabled people to communicate.

i would like to know how the sounds effect you when you listen to the clips i provided. i am profoundly curious as to what emotions/feeling/sensations people feel with low frequency sounds/non-sounds.

have you guys heard of anti-noise devices? i wonder if it is some type of technology that uses low frequencies to cancel out higher frequencies.

Most anti-noise devices have a small pickup and electronics that re-transmit an out-of-phase version of the original to null it out.

(My laptop speakers won't do justice to the clips... I'll listen tonight)

A single tone can be represented as a simple waveform called a sine wave. It starts at zero, rises to a positive peak, falls back through zero, continues to a negative peak, and then comes back to zero again. That would be one cycle.

"Out of phase" means that you generate an accompanying tone that starts at zero and falls to a negative peak first, etc., etc.

The negative parts of the out-of-phase tone cancel the positive parts of the original tone, and the positive parts of the out-of-phase tone cancel the negative parts of the original tone.

This effect occurs if you hook up one of your stereo speakers backwards. You get a cancellation in the middle of the room, because when one speaker is pushing air towards you, the other speaker is pulling air away from you.

Yes. It's also a way to reduce the radar return from an object, but that involves electromagnetics rather than sound.
