Apply for Social Security Disability. If you are denied, appeal it with the help of a lawyer who specializes in such claims. You have put a lot of money into the system over the years so do not feel bad about it.


You can also work part time while on SSD. Do not feel like you just have to give up work. SS actually encourages people to try to get back in the workforce. They also have what is called the "Ticket to Work" program where they have employers who are involved with SS and getting people back into the workforce.


While on SSD........you will not lose it unless your earnings are once again considered competitive......currently approx. 900 gross per month average over a period of 9 months.
