Here's to you Dad, still miss you.

Your father was a fortunate man indeed. He had you for a son or daughter and you still remember and care enough to have told the world tonight! Most are not so fortunate! Bless you and your family for the honor and respect you still hold for your dad! May your children feel the same way about you when your time on earth is over.

Your father was indeed a hero and deserving of respect and the medals he received for his dedication to duty and you should be proud of him.

On the other hand, my father served in the Canadian Army and received no important medals to my knowledge while in the military and although I know little about his experiences I am judging the man after the fact and he was a cruel and sadistic man warranting only the douche bag award.

I am certain that you have not committed the same atrocities as those of my father, and thus will be remembered with honor and respect by your descendants.

Honestly that is so sad that your father was like that. Sorry I really don't know what to say.

There is no need to say anything and for the record, I am a female who chose not to have children and the years of my marriage are testament that I have been a good wife and supportive partner. I was merely trying to let you know that you and your family should be proud of your father, as many others probably inherently cruel and should be remembered as the sadistic monsters they were.

Thanks it is over however I will always feel my mother was a victim of his cruelty when he told her there was not enough money for her to see a doctor because he was the one really sick and not her.

I jumped in to take my mother to a doctor and all the self-centered bastard could balk about was what I would do for him it was always about him.

My mother passed a few months later never knowing life from under his sadistic thumb and I wish I knew my mother was feeling ill before overhearing that conversation, as she might still be alive today.

My Father was there too, at the Battle of the Bulge, and we were both blessed that they returned.
Have you/he sent for his military records?
We have my dads and what treasure,
I sent for them after he passed on,which was right before Ken Burns' documentry was aired.."The War" a masterpiece work, and if you haven't seen it rent it, a must.
They certainly were the "Greatest Generation" and we have much to be proud of, being their children.

I would like to add my appreciation for all of our heroes...There are quite a few of you here on GLP...True men of honor are modest and don't ask, nor want attention for the sacrifices they made.

I think that now and then it's only appropriate to show gratitude...

Last veterans day, a client of mine made a fantastic breakthrough and paid off his house and his last kids college bill and subsequently our last meeting on a professional basis...

I have an open liquor shelf on the wall behind my desk. He was so happy to be debt free, and excited to be in a position to start giving to others...well, have you ever been hugged by a Marine?

I have many times...

we had a couple shots to celebrate and then he asked me for the final bill; I told him:

Thank you for your service, and shook his hand...

He looked at me and walked out the door...and through the big picture window he turned and saluted me. Just as bold and honorable as you can imagine...I stood there making eye contact for what seemed like an hour. Then he turned and walked away...

Every once in a while?

I vacillate.

Sometimes you're a grade-A turdbucket and I'm not so sure.

Then you write something like that, and my faith is restored.

Here is the write up done why he received the Silver Star and Purple Heart at the ripe old age of 19.

When his company was halted by intense enemy machine gun fire after having advanced a considerable distance into the Siegfried Line. My father directed the fire of a tank destroyer on an enemy pillbox. Although this action somewhat lessened the superiority of enemy fire power, it was still impossible for friendly troops to advance. My father then led three other men toward an enemy machine gun positioned which he had observed. Although the other three men were killed before they could reach the position, he continued alone in the face of intense enemy fire and succeeded in destroying the emplacement, enabling his company to resume its advance.

A prime example of the inner strength most people never get the opportunity to realize they have.

So what method do you use to weed out the weak minded?

I really want to thank everyone for their kind words. I have been told by my aunts and uncles that my father came back a very changed man after the war. He was less arrogant, less cocky and became more introspective.

You could never sneak up on him nor sneak in the house; my brothers, my sister and I really tried during our teen years to sneak in after curfew thinking he would be asleep. He slept very lightly and would always catch us.




He refused to talk about what he did during the war. We only learned what he did after he died even though our family vacations were attending his infantry reunions. At his funeral several of the men from his infantry came and told us how he helped them during the war. He had made them promise not to tell his children about the war; they felt it was appropriate to let us know what a good man he was.

That was just the way my father was; he always did random acts of kindness and never wanted any acknowledgment for what he did. I try to honor him by following in his footsteps.





Yes, we are very blessed they returned as many lost their lives in that battle. Actually my uncle had gotten his war records for us. My uncle had served in the Navy in the Pacific. My uncle still cries every year around this time as he remembers my father being wounded in this horrific battle. I feel very sorry for him as he is the last sibling alive and his loneliness for his siblings is palpable.
