H5N1 - China
Hong Kong Authorities Confirm Virus Infection in the Dead Chicken

"A dead bird found in the territory of South China is making the Hong Kong authorities run from pillar to post as it has tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus.

The dead chicken was found on the island shore on December 18 and the carcass was in a complete decomposed state, as per the government sources.

The Hong Kong government is particularly worried about this incident because there is no poultry farm within the 3 kilometers of the island. Even the villages nearby do not have any family owning even a single bird."

Diseases have the potential to develop into an epidemic, but none has been so devastating in history as the Black Death (bubonic plague), which raged on the ground the better part of two centuries, millions of deaths. New disease of avian influenza (H5N1) was recently (2003), there are some similarities between the disease and the Black Plague, which are too horrible to ignore.

The plague broke out in China in the early years of 1300 and spread quickly in Europe and worldwide Westward. Bird (avian) flu cons, once the initial breakdown of the East (Vietnam) in 2003 and steadily westward to countries like China, Thailand, Indonesia, Egypt and Turkey to do name a few.

And now in Myanmar

Thousands of chickens wiped out in Myanmar in wake of avian influenza recurrence

YANGON, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Over 50,000 chickens suspected of carrying virulent avian influenza were wiped out following the discovery of unusual death of 700 three-month-old chickens in a poultry farm in Sittway, Myanmar's western Rakhine state, recently, the local weekly Popular News reported Wednesday.

And Japan

Japan facing avian bird flu pandemic, 5th farm tests positive for virus

TOKYO, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- A Japanese poultry farm in Toyashi, Aichi Prefecture may be the latest to have its chickens contract the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu, the farm ministry said Wednesday.

In Aichi Prefecture, some 450 chickens died in just four days through Wednesday, and four chickens have already tested positive in preliminary examinations for the virulent strain of the avian flu virus, Aichi prefectural government officials said.

Avian flu spreading at rapid pace / Infection routes hard to determine; migratory birds seen as responsible

The highly infectious H5N1 avian flu strain has been spreading this winter at an unprecedented pace throughout the nation, with Aichi Prefecture the latest prefecture affected.

Not one single case of bird flu was detected among livestock from around the end of 2009 to the beginning of last year, but this winter, the virus has been detected in wild duck droppings in Hokkaido and a flu outbreak was confirmed at a poultry farm in Shimane Prefecture in late November.

Someone probably tossed it into the waterway for fear of having their entire flock culled should someone find out there was H5N1 present.

Influenza viruses circulating in animals pose threats to human health. Humans can become ill when infected with viruses from animal sources, such as avian influenza virus subtypes H5N1 and H9N2 and swine influenza virus subtypes H1N1 and H3N2. The primary risk factor for human infection appears to be direct or indirect exposure to infected live or dead animals or contaminated environments.

h5n1 can survive ion aquatic biomes if people are twinge dead chickens o birds are dying in wear then the cloud be a very real risk of human exposure

Re: H5N1 - China
The survival of HPAI H5N1 viruses in experimental aquatic biotopes (water, mud, aquatic flora and fauna) relevant to field conditions in Cambodia was investigated. Artificial aquatic biotopes, including simple ones containing only mud and water, and complex biotopes involving the presence of aquatic flora and fauna, were set up. They were experimentally contaminated with H5N1 virus. The persistence of HPAI H5N1 virus (local avian and human isolates) was determined by virus isolation in embryonated chicken eggs and by real-time reverse-polymerase chain reaction. Persistence of infectious virus did not exceed 4 days, and was only identified in rain water. No infectious virus particles were detected in pond and lake water or mud even when high inoculum doses were used. However, viral RNA persisted up to 20 days in rain water and 7 days in pond or lake water. Viral RNA was also detected in mud samples, up to 14 days post-contamination in several cases. Infectious virus and viral RNA was detected in few cases in the aquatic fauna and flora, especially in bivalves and labyrinth fish, although these organisms seemed to be mostly passive carriers of the virus rather than host allowing virus replication.
