Go to Home Depot and get a 12x16 ft storage shed about $ 5000, $7500 if you get the loft.

Insulate it, put a wood stove in it, get solar panels, drill a well and put a septic system in.

Or get a repo Mobile Home.

Depends on the climate, how much money you have, how much you want to learn, and how hard you want to work.

Might want to check out Mike Ohlers' $50 and up underground house book.

The first thing I'd look into is earth-bermed construction, depending on the lay of the land ...

but I have no idea - I'm no expert ... just a little envious hf

you don't begin to give enough info.. such as what's your climate, what's your nearest and cheapest building material, how primitive do you want to be because a teepee
is by far the cheapest and easiest.. are you on a slope?
how deep is your topsoil? how deep is the water table? do you have a spring or running natural water.. building a decent survival/family home takes research and ingenuity.. you won't get many useful answers until you've thoroughly looked into the many possibilities..

Built a two story straw bale home in the mnts of NM back in 99. Super insulation. 2400 sq feet and heated it with all the hot air the wife let out yelling at me.

there are contractors who only do some of the work and you do some...like they start doing the siding and you can do some (pay them by the hr I guess) or you paint the walls...install carpet...maybe you could even join a buyers club that gives discounts...shop around for each step of the way...make sure whoever you use is licensed, has insurence, there are web sites that screen contractors nowaday also...GOOD LUCK and GOD BLESS YOU what a blessing...i hope your taxes will be ok.grow some organic veggies in the spring...the magazine mother earth news i think adv a greenhouse that reflects harmful rays...it's green...maybe get some chickens!

Re: BEST CHEAPEST WAY TO BUILD A HOME (I INHERITED 6 ACRES)
Earthbag houses!

Using soil-filled sacks (earthbags) for construction has been recently revived as an important natural building technique for several reasons. It is inexpensive, using locally available site soil and polypropylene or burlap sacks, which often can be obtained free or at low cost. The technique demands few skills, and is easy to learn. In addition, building with the bags goes extremely quickly, much faster than any other earth-building technique. They are adaptable to numerous site conditions and can be used with just about any type of fill material available. When built properly, earthbags are extremely strong, and as the bags themselves are lightweight and easily transported, they are useful for remote locations or emergency shelter. Thus, it is a flexible means of construction usable in a wide range of situations to create a variety of forms and structures.

I'm very, very serious. I know of one person who built a very, very homey Earthbag house for under $3,000. That was with two bedrooms and with plumbing and electricity installed!

They then put in a stove, rather than central heating/air, but it works extremely well. It's sturdy and efficient. They absolutely love it. Have a loft and everything.

I did that years ago when my father gave me 4 acres. I sold a fixer/investment property that I was able to make enough off of to buy a nice shingle roofed/wood sided single wide real cheap, remodel it, and set it up. Been enjoying being debt free every since.

Re: BEST CHEAPEST WAY TO BUILD A HOME (I INHERITED 6 ACRES)
They could make a reality series from my story:

I have been "retired" from the construction industry for about 10 years. I went through carpenters union apprentice training and worked for about 16 years before getting a contractors license. Contracted for about 15 years.

In 2005, I sold a property in West L.A. for more than 10 times what I bought it for. Took the proceeds and bought a gentlemans ranch in TX. hill country...and paid cash for 1/2 acre open space lot in the foothills near L.A.

I have been building a large house (3000 sq ft) on the land for the last 4 years....solo...with little or no help...had to install state of the art, waste water treatment before I could get a building permit. I dug all the footings, tied all the steel, placed all the concrete and did all the framing, electric and plumbing myself...paid for materials with cash.
Paid one contractor to do the fire sprinklers, and another to design the 5 ton hvac system...which I am currently installing.

During this work, I have been living onsite in a 40 foot fleetwood prowler trailer I paid $12k for used. So far, I saved about $100k in rent, and about $300k in labor. When completed...house should be worth (even in today's shitty market) about $750k (I have spent about $400k for materials and the land).

If I live long enough...I should have it completed by the end of the 2011 summer break (I've been teaching full time for the duration of the project)

I am pretty worn out and feel like I have aged 10 years since starting the project...and hope to retire to TX...once it's all finished...

It seems like 3000sqft is a little much for a single person.
