Northern Ireland - 40,000 without water,,,,
Link: [link to www.bbc.co.uk]

Snip from BBC News website:
Northern Ireland's deputy first minister has said he feels "absolutely let down" by NI Water's handling of a crisis in water supplies.

He was speaking as 40,000 people across NI struggled to cope without water - some for over a week.

Martin McGuinness said people were left without water and without information as to when it would be restored.

"My focus is on how NI Water can do things better over the course of the next number of days," he said.

"The biggest challenge is to provide accurate information and to ensure people who have been deprived - some for up to 11 days - can have water restored."

Mr McGuinness said NI Water would provide information about when people's water supplies would be restored and cut off on their website later on Wednesday.

"Our concern has to be around the difficulties experienced by elderly people and young people with very young babies," he said.

Northern Ireland Water is a government-run company and is NI's sole provider of water and sewerage services.

It has said an unprecedented number of leaks caused by the thaw following a long period of freezing weather have been putting "big pressure" on its systems.

Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy said: "The big problems have been communication and the lack of information on the ground.

"People want certainty that they are going to get accurate information as to what is happening and to get water restored."

Northern Ireland Water has warned that the disruption could continue for several more days.

Executive ministers are to hold a meeting on Thursday to discuss the crisis.

Almost 80 towns and villages across NI have been affected.

The Scottish Executive has offered to supply bottled water if required.

Local councils are working to supply water and offer free showers to people without a mains supply.

If they new that the water supply was running low. They should have been rationing water and keeping people updated on the situation.
Hopefully this is a lesson learned and it will not happen again.

freezing pipes burst...
But if at the Church they would give us some ale,
And a pleasant fire our souls to regale,
We'd sing and we'd pray all the live-long day,
And never once wish from the Church to stray.

I have a feeling that this kind of thing is gonna happen in the UK too! Next week I believe the big freeze is set to return. I've already started to stock up on main supplies just to be on the safe side.

Message to anyone here at GLP from Ireland, good luck and keep safe. My thoughts are with you.

Okay, the way I read that article was that the frozen pipes caused the problem, not a water supply issue.
Poor planning indeed, terrible preparation but not a rationing issue, it is just not available.

Northern England here.

Sucks being without water :/

Have just temporarily fixed six leaks around the farm & managed to get the water back on at half pressure :)

Think I'll wait til after next week's freeze to fix them properly - just in case.

Pain in the arse!

Good luck, Ireland

Fact is, our water system was not built to deal with modern demand. the system is old and should have been replaced back in the 50s. This was always going to happen. I remember growing up when the water was always off, but my folks where smart enough to have enough water to get us through any of this. Pitty the "modern" generation are so fucking doped up to see it.

Don't be so sure about that, I've seen evidence that people are desperately trying to get civic services to upgrade the antiquated water systems, but all they do is wring their hands and say they don't have the money to do any such extensive refit.

It takes huge quantities of snow to melt into enough water to count.
They don't have that kind of snowbase there and what little fell is melting away.
