Step 1: remove linoleum
Step 2: put in ceramic tile

lmao
Thanks for all the great replies. Making a joke of it all makes it seem not so bad.
Will look into the laminate & the painting & all the cleaning, actually will look into ALL of it, start with the easiest cheapest thing and work my way up.
I may end up with the torch after all is said & done.
Thanks you wonderful GLPers.

By the time you spend money on cleaning products or paint/supplies you could just buy the sticky-tiles. We did our lake house bathroom and it looks great! Family Dollar tiles.
Accept now that all you have seen from the day of your birth on the surface of the earth, to the present, and all that you will meet here are wonderful only because the finite mind of man is confused with fragments of evidence, that, from whatever direction we meet them, spring from an unreachable infinity.

Very true. That was why I put new floors in. I spent a little more than cleansers. And didn't have to look at those ugly old floors anymore. Yea!

So what do you want for your time and money?
Behind door one we have duh duhduh duuuuuuh *
A nice, new, beautiful floor and the bonus of a sudden desire to get a new bathroom set and shower curtain.

Or, behind door number 2 we have duh duhduh duuuuuuuh *
A counter full of cleansers, scrubbers, waxes, and a pink pair of rubber gloves
The bonus with this package is.............a weekend of scrubbing, scraping, rubbing, stinky fumes, and chemical headache.
And, you get to keep staring at the same old floor, with the spots you can still see even if no one else can.

Re: How do I clean an badly stained bathroom linoleum floor?
It is is really linoleum, it most likely has a thickish layer of wax that the water got under. Ammonia will strip the wax, all of the other cleaners you have tried will sit on top of the wax and not touch the stain.

If this is old linoleum, made in 1970 or earlier is most likely has asbestos in it. I strongly suggest you get an asbestos test kit and scrape/nick a part of the lino say behind the toilet where no one can see and use the test kit on it.

It it comes back positive, then you will need to have a crew come in and remove the linoleum,

Self stick vinyl tiles will not stick to the waxes linoleum, so either way you will have to strip it.

If you do plan on using vinyl tiles, then I suggest you get a floor adhesive to use along with the sticky of the tiles.

Most places code allows one to cover a stable linoleum floor with other flooring materials, in some areas the code has been modified to have all asbestos products, not matter how a stable they are, removed when remodeling.

Now if you actually have vinyl tiles (like the self sticking kind) that lots of people mistakenly call linoleum, then you have a clear coat plastic that is part of the tile, liquid got under that and the tile is stained forever.

DO NOT use a laminated wood flooring in the bathroom.

1. It will have to go under the toilet, which means you will have to have the ring raised and if the wax seal even starts seeping the flooring will swell, buckle, pulling up the toilet and making a huge mess.

2. There is no way to slide it under the bottom of a standard built in tub, that gap in front of the tub will collect water, thus the laminate will warp, buckle, fall apart.

Re: How do I clean an badly stained bathroom linoleum floor?
Woah, maybe it's NOT linoleum, I just assumed.
It was put in in the 80's. Would it not be linoleum then?
As for the cleaners, I have some open bottles here of assorted products that I don't use. So I wouldn't be spending money.
Now I KNOW I used to have some CLR in the basement. That stuff was awesome, like vinegar and boiling water mixed together, I have to see if I can find that.

I also have some of that pink (like soft lard) stuff-Quick N Brite and also some OXY clean. Will try those as weel and no not mixing, one item at a time.

I don't have oven cleaner though and would hate to buy it if it didn't do the job.

Thanks again all.

Re: How do I clean an badly stained bathroom linoleum floor?
I've been searching online and can't find anything, I know I will get some good answers here.

It's stained from a toilet leaking multiple times and the water just sitting there on the floor. I've tried bleach, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and vinegar and a Mr Clean eraser.

There are grey stains on the floor yet. Please help.

And so sorry to take you away from your doom for this.
