Music composer and network engineer Domenico Vicinanza has brought together his two loves by making music from the particle tracks of positrons passing through cloud chambers.
The sealed metallic vessels are filled with superheated liquids or vapors, which detect electrically charged particles passing through them, like the more modern silicon particle detectors used in the LHC at Cern. Positrons fired through the chambers — antiparticles of electrons, a trillionth of a meter in size — are subatomic and make no measurable sound by themselves, so Vicinanza had to work out a method to bring their music to life.

He took data stored on the International Science Grid that depicts the tracks, or routes, taken through the chambers by positrons, and draws those directly onto music staves. The elegant arcs and lines are then used as a path over which music notes are laid. Vicinanza composes the melodies himself and his customized software automatically harmonizes the tracks.

“My plan is to sonify some of the early tracks recorded with cloud chambers. I was thinking of a piano trio,” Vicinanza told iSGTW. The resulting music sounds a little like scales being played simultaneously — one ascending in notes and the other descending. [link to www.wired.com]

The two brainiacs will be exploring the musical possibilities of high-end quantum theory Saturday with philosopher Nick Bostrom and cosmologists Alan Guth and Andrei Linde at the World Science Festival in New York.

“Think of every sound as a universe in its own right,” Spooky, otherwise known as Paul Miller, told Wired.com in an e-mail interview. “Vibrations, waveforms — they are all patterns. The collaboration with Brian is a kind of macro-scale look at the universe through sound.”

While Spooky and crew’s sonic exploration is sold out, the multitalented DJ theorist has provided Wired.com with a sneak listen below. His team-up with Greene (pictured above), who co-founded the World Science Festival with his Emmy-winning spouse Tracy Day in 2008, is a musical taste of things to come.

“This is a sneak peak of the collaboration,” Spooky said. “We’re presenting a larger-scale version later. I wrote the composition, and I’m having the International Contemporary Ensemble play it. DJ Composer, y’all!”

The science fest promises to melt your mind in more ways than one. It’s got a killer slate of brain candy, from interviews with Nobel laureates and considerations of climate crisis, neuroscience and evolutionary behaviorism to the star power of Harrison Ford, Yo-Yo Ma and Michael Hogan (Battlestar Galactica‘s pop-eyed Colonel Tigh to you noobs).

LYRID METEOR SHOWER: The annual Lyrid meteor shower peaks this weekend on the night of April 21-22 when Earth passes through a stream of debris from ancient Comet Thatcher. Usually the shower is mild (10-20 meteors per hour) but unmapped filaments of dust in the comet's tail sometimes trigger outbursts ten times stronger. The Lyrids are a strong meteor shower lasting from April 16 to April 26[1] each year. The radiant of the meteor shower is located in the constellation Lyra, peaking at April 22—hence they are also called the Alpha Lyrids or April Lyrids. what we observe and experience within our magnetosphere we have labeled in newtonion and einsteinian belief because we have formed our awareness of our environment from the inside out

we did not possess ability to test either newtons or einsteins beliefs when they appeared correct to us, we were assuming that all outside of our magnetosphere was as we thought it was while looking at it from the inside of our magnetosphere structure

when we went outside of our structure (tree) we discovered it was not as we had imagined

the only electricity earth can and does receive is electricity functioning as the structure of our heliosphere structure demands it functions thus our sun is the regulator of our heliosphere structure which it regulates in accordance to the electricity our sun and we receive from within the structure of our galaxy

looking at the distance between the various reports you maybe will agree that something solid enough to exceed our sound barrier over such a distance must remain solid to cause the effect thus it must hit the ground with an even louder sound, where it a meteor
