The Troxler Effect fades out features that a person isn't directly staring at. Those features are filled in with what's around them. It works on a white background, but a face looks horrifying when, for example, a slice of forehead and cheek are subbed in for an eye. Plus, the effect doesn't stay in one place. The Troxler Effect wanders over the entire face, distorting it massively. The person then often instinctively turns those distortions into things that they can actually recognize, even if it scares them. This is how mirror monsters, like Bloody Mary, develop. The brain gets tired of processing the mundane and, accidentally, cooks up a monster to entertain us.

Belief that photos steal your soul?

In the average person, if you were told to think of an apple, neurons would fire in the same exact pattern as if you were actually shown an apple. This is a mirror neural circuit by definition as it is like a reflection of the same neurons that fire when you actually see an object with your physical senses, i.e., eyes, ears, nose, etc. As far as your brain is concerned, your mind does not know the difference between thinking about the apple and actually seeing the apple in front of you. thus you may see that the effect a person or anything has upon you, the feelings generated within you thus forming your feelings of it , is dependent by the volume of charge that person or thing has circulating within it, consciously or unconsciously as in:
are they on high volume or low volume emotively themselves, because their charged sensations will dictate your emotive sensation of them
