A full-blown fiscal crisis in Spain, the euro region’s fourth-largest economy, would strain the system to the breaking point, Nobel Prize-winning economist Christopher Pissarides said. “If Spain were to collapse then the money needed to rescue it would be so much that I doubt whether the stronger European nations, Germany in particular, would be either able or willing to accumulate all of the funds,” Pissarides, who teaches at the London School of Economics, said at a forum in Beijing today. Anonymous Coward User ID: 1036317 Spain 01/12/2011 08:57 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Spanish banks have more than 30 billion euros ($39 billion) in debt coming due in the next four months. This year the country’s banks have a total of about 85 billion euros of debt that’s coming due for refinancing, data compiled by Bloomberg show. “What are the implications of paying this much for financing for several months or years?” said Zoso Davies, a credit strategist at Barclays Capital in London. “The question is how long can they stand the pain?” [link to www.bloomberg.com] The banks here just won't work with anyone to help them re-schedule payments. If you're 3 months behind on your mortgage then they repossess your house - it's that simple. No negotiating or refinancing. When the crisis started the banks went on a spree of repossessions and obviously thought it would work in their favour but now they have 1000s of properties on EACH urbanization. Add the problem of scam artists and back handers and it's a huge mess here. Here's a link to a story about just ONE developer. [link to www.surinenglish.com] |
