While i do acknowledge the fact of a major earthquake being about to hapen in the New Madrid area, i find all the talk of how the only way to escape the coming disaster is to *drumroll PLEASE!* pray. GWEN towers have been around for a LONG time. There was one located in Gettysburg PA just off rte 30E (near WalMart of all places.)

From what we were told, GWEN stands for "ground wave emergency network". It was designed so that - if there were no human beings left to "push the button".....the GWEN tower would signal to our remaining nuclear assets to launch.

I had understood that the system was rather antiquated at this point; a better system has been developed. However, the GWEN towers are still tested periodically. The white light will become red when the tower is being tested for the integrity of its communications.
