yeah, it's the shift/flow of the glacier from west to east that has me a bit worried. is that indicating a tilt up in the west of the caldera I wonder?

I am no doom prophet and I have lived in Iceland long enough to notice patterns. I check the site several times a day. If this was weather related we might just as well throw all the seismic measuring equiptment away. This is a genuine alert as far as I am concerned, and the first real sign of Katla awakening. I did predict a second feb-march eruption at eyjafjallajökull, I am hoping that will be the case and Katla remains asleep, but this does look worrying , especially when it is on your doorstep

Storm warning over the whole island ; northerly 20-25 m/s, -10 to -20 °C , snowdrift. If Katla erupts anytime soon it will blow over the UK in a matter of hours :)

TO be absolutely honest; the wind shakes my house far more than the earth, if difference twixt those exists; I haven't actually felt the ground shake for the longest time...
There is an expectancy in the air, but no alarm or angst -
more pressure than tension.

well it never totally stopped, but if it is as stormy as some people are suggesting you would not see any steam. I just saw two aircraft fly over it so it looks like there is some concern and it cant be so rough as these were most likely helicopters.

the tremor amplitude does seem to be increasing. Are you in Reykjavik?

now it stops almost completely…was quite alot of steam betwen 17.28 and 17.45 icelandic time.

Strange lights indeed

Those lights can't be common, I have been watching on and off for the past several months and have never seen any flashes at night, with all the quakes today it may be trying to break through the ice.

any widespread risks if it blows? or just a local problem

btw, the aurora Borealis showing in the katla cam earlier this evening was simply beautiful. I wish it was a color cam, but we are lucky to have one at all :)

I saw lots of them last night, definitely ruled out road or air traffic, they travelled too slowly in too straight a line for either of those. And they would suddenly increase in brightness 10 fold and then eventually fade out. Must have watched about 20 go through their routine, it was fascinating, whatever it was.

Couldn't hurt matters...let's try it and see shall we?

Simply, the answer is no. I'm sorry. Swarms are very much normal, as long as it can be. ... I know that sounds fishy, but it's the truth. Matter of fact; you can check any seismograph in that area, and it might come up with something - but rest assured - there is nothing going to happen, unless the volcano itself says so. Therefore, I know that a lot of people watch Iceland, but it means nothing. Why? Because there are lots of other volcanoes who need much more attention than any of those in Iceland.

Remember one thing when looking at seismographs: the time, the time line, and the age - plus, the volume of the caldera. If any of the aforementioned isn't there, then your whole calculation doesn't work. Watch the weather in the area..., and so on. It's easy to blow the whistle on nothing, but it's hard to account for real facts. ;o)

You're all scared of Yellowstone, Katla (why ever), and any other small "dip shits", but what about the real big ones in your own neighborhood? Do they account for nothing?

Therefore, watch out; learn to read and understand the seismographs. Learn about your area..., and so on. I mean - TOBA in Indonesia wasn't crowned the biggest volcano for no reason. ;o) You might still think, that Yellowstone, The VALLES/Valley Caldera are the biggest on his planet - but you're wrong. It's Toba, and others, together with Yellowstone who play a part...

To get back on topic - the Icland volcanos might be pretty frightening for some people, but they aren't for the ones in the know. lol And I mean this. Volcanos are everywhere - so - think about it - it's earth. Be afraid, and fear will eat you. haha
