Well....it's more than just theory really...there is also hard evidence of past magnetic pole reversals. We are much better now at measuring things so there will be a lot more info and theorizing out there just because we can "see" more in this day and age. However, you might have to keep your fingers crossed for a few thousand years before anything happens though...
