Changes deep within the Earth's core that are causing the north magnetic pole to drift have caused Tampa International Airport to rename one of its runways.
Tampa is about 3,500 miles south of the north magnetic pole, which is wandering east toward Russia. Nevertheless, the shifting magnetic pole has caused TIA to shut down its main runway until Jan. 13 in order to change all the signs at both ends, as well as all the taxiway signage.
Runways are named for their corresponding angles to the Earth's magnetic axis.
Tampa's main runway was once aligned at a 180 degree
