Paranoid Reality User ID: 1214803 United States 01/08/2011 01:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Funny... I've been working at the same job, testing electronic compasses (magnetometers) for 6 years and haven't ever had to re-align our compasses to magnetic north. (San Jose CA area.) Also... People using our sensors have a correction factor that they can enter to compensate for the MAGNETIC DECLINATION (which is the difference in degrees between true and magnetic north). I suppose you could look up past Magnetic Declinations and see how much it has changed. Though we would have certainly noticed it by now. So what's all the fuss about? Can someone show me some real data? I suppose that Mag. N. has drifted 10 deg. over 30-40 years. But nobody mentions the time frame. PR |

Quoting: ~Miss GAIA~Laws of physics and the math doesn't support the big flooding fear. The ratio of MELTED snow and ice, converting to the total volume of water, ON LAND, to the total volume of all the oceans on Earth that will absorb the extra water is almost invalid. The ice and snow OVER WATER? Fill a glass with ice, then water right to the brim and let it melt. Guess what? There will be slightly LOWER water level in the glass. Then again, wherever the poles will shift to will gain all that snow and ice that comes from the clouds formed by ocean evaporation. |

Quoting: The EstonianBecause it does. There, I made it simple to understand for you. Magnetic fields change and move, thus the poles move. They always have and always will. Why should it have any impact on the geographical pole? Geographical North and South poles are the exact sites of the beginning of the imaginary axle on which Earth spins around. It has absolutely nothing to do with the magnetic field of our planet. Oh, and a newsflash for you - magnetic North pole is actually the South pole and the South pole is actually the North pole. Try to wrap that around your brain or simply take a few courses in your community college. That helps. And that's why you live in estonia. |

Quoting: ^àTOn^What disturbances ? Some believe that the sun controls for a large part out climate. Others believe that an errant magnetique pole combined with a large CME energy impact could seiously make the earth whobble. Another belief is that the sun rays coming through a weakend magnetique protection field might harm people and nature and could cause food chain disruptions. Maybe there are other beliefs ? If you have any post them ! If the magnetic field becomes neutral, CMEs from the sun will destroy DNA in all forms of life. Anonymous Coward User ID: 1222288 United States 01/08/2011 02:10 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Earth’s Magnetic Field Shifts, Forcing Airport Runway Change The magnetic north pole is currently hovering over the North Sea and moving toward Siberia. This means two Florida airports are renumbering their runways. Odd as this connection may appear on the surface, the adjustments under way at Tampa International Airport and beginning next week at Peter O'Knight Airport are the result of a natural, ongoing process. Earth's magnets The Earth has an iron core, and movement within its outer part is likely responsible for sustaining a magnetic field, which constitutes much of what we measure at the Earth's surface. As a result, the Earth resembles something of a giant magnet with two poles: magnetic north and magnetic south. However, its field is not perfectly symmetrical and has undulations that are always moving around, according to Jeffrey Love, a research scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey's Geomagnetism Program. The magnetic poles don't line up with the geographic ones, and the difference between them is an angle called declination. As if this wasn't enough of a nuisance for navigators, the Earth's magnetic field drifts, causing the angle of declination to change over time. In fact, it drifts about one-fifth of a degree a year at lower latitudes, such as Florida. "So that means if you wait five years, the compass will be off by one degree," Love said. For long-distance air travel, an error of only a couple of degrees could translate to arriving in the wrong airport, Love said. Anonymous Coward User ID: 877408 Mexico 01/08/2011 03:21 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | PILOT INTERESTING OPINION QUOTE "Dave, IFR means "Instrument Flight Rules". If Yahoo doesn't mind, I'll explain this problem, and they may even allow it in their comments section. How solicitous.. Magnetic Variation is a common occurrence. Charts published by the NOAA at regular intervals reflect positional changes in the earth's magnetic pole. The difference between True North and Magnetic North is measured precisely, and depicted on charts with dashed, bold magenta colored lines. These are called "Isogonic Variation Lines", and pilots use these figures to determine compass headings for a particular course segment. The old adage "East is Least, and West is Best" prompts pilots to add or subtract the degrees of variation figure based upon it's published direction. An Easterly variation would be subtracted from a True course. For example, our runway at Mcclellan AFB was aimed almost directly at the True North Pole (360 degrees). The easterly variation (15.8 degrees) figure of the Magnetic Pole is subtracted from that value, and the magnetic direction was 344 degrees. Hence, our runway was designated Runway 34. (The last digit is discarded for runway designation, but it IS published on supplemental charts for pilots to reference for landings and takeoffs.) When a value of variation exceeds 1/2 of the whole number (For example, if the magnetic variation for McClellan exceeded 17 degrees) the runway would need to be redesignated with the lower value, and all newer navigation charts would be changed to reflect that newer value. I've been in aviation a long time, and I've yet to see ANY runway number changed for this reason." |

Walking Owl User ID: 1180799 Canada 01/08/2011 04:19 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Serious investigation shows that this alarmist announcement is greatly overblown. The magnetic shift and rate of the pole movement at this time is natural and ongoing. What will be significant is if and when the magnetic polar continuity becomes disrupted as a polar shift occurs and the field collapses. As in the past this would manifest as a collection of random and false polar regions evidenced around the globe -- this is the precursor of a magnetic pole shift resulting in reversal. If you enjoy worrying, cast your attention to the phenomena of equatorial bulge--it is growing and is storing uncountable volumes of polar ice melt water. If it reaches a tipping point--wham!
