Rioting spreads to Tunisian resort

Demonstrators on Thursday smashed up a police station and holiday villas as anti-government protests in Tunisia spread to the chic Hammamet Mediterranean resort popular with Europeans and the country's ruling class, AFP correspondents reported.

A police station was destroyed along with the local headquarters of President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali's ruling party and several luxury villas, including one residents said was owned by a member of Ben Ali's inner circle.

Graffiti scrawled on a wall of the villa, situated on Hammamet's swanky Corniche, said: "Death to Ben Ali". The villa was totally destroyed.
Protesters erected barricades in the streets, and shops were smashed and looted.

Tunisian president orders forces to stop firing on protestors


Tunisian President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali said on Thursday he had ordered an end to security forces firing on demonstrators, as a wave of anti-government protests intensified and the death toll mounted.

The president, who has been in power for 23 years, also said in an address to the nation that he does not wish to seek another term in office.

It will be the third time since the outbreak of protests in mid-December that the authoritarian leader has addressed the nation, and the second time this week.

Al-Qaeda leader supports Tunisian protests




An Al-Qaeda leader expressed support Thursday for protesters in Tunisia's deadly unrest, urging violent jihad to overthrow the "tyrant" president, a monitoring group said.

In a 13-minute video posted on jihadist forums, the leader of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, Abu Musab Abdul Wadud, also gave strategic advice and urged protesters to "send their sons to us to receive training with weapons and to gain military experience," the US-based SITE Monitoring Service said.
