Been wrong for awhile now. Seems interesting to something we have all seen since childhood, check out any site on moon phases and you will see it has ALWAYS been a verticle line all of a sudden has changed and you hear nothing about that.

A few hundred miles north from you, OP. I watched the moon most of the day, from at least since 1pm.

It looks like a moon of its age and time of year to be, and it's close to Jupiter, as a bonus.

Very lovely amongst the high clouds of a storm moving in. hf

It may look vertical in simulations, but the moon's angle changes throughout the year, and depends on the latitude you live in.

Quoting myself from another thread, and matching the OP's photograph with a screencapture,

It's normal, common, and predicted.

Here is a screenshot by Mooncalc 6.0

[link to picasaweb.google.com]

It is a program released in 2001 available free for download [link to www.ummah.com] The link is also in the caption.

The next picture is of the same, by the online version of Skyview Cafe skyviewcafe.com

The last is a page from "Astronomical Algorithms", explaining how the Moon and everything else appears to rotate.

Notice the different tilt angle to the moon. Honest it is just normal, don't go by simulations which are only interested in giving you the percentage of growth, not the tilt it will show in your locale.

I always remember the partition of light to shadow being vertical as well. Definately seems weird. Maybe now I'm just taking notice to it.

Google "Hilal moon."

There are millions of Muslims keeping very close track of the moon for religious purposes.

According to this astronomer, it should only happen once every 7-14 months. Happens a lot more frequently now.

Q: How often does a 'Dry Moon' happen with the horns of the Moon pointed straight up?

A 'Dry Moon' requires that the Moon's orbit be nearly perpendicular to the horizon above the setting Sun. On February 8, 1997 this condition was satisfied from some locations on the Earth.

-- snip --

The Moon visits the same RA as the Sun once each month. To be there within a few days after New Moon happens about once every 29/2 or 29/4 months or once each 7-14 months I would estimate depending on whether you choose a 2 or 4 day old crescent phase.

Actually, this isn't a wet or dry Moon, both of which require a crescent Moon. We did have a wet moon not long ago.

Re: Moon is wrong in the sky tonight
Here's a great quote from "Popular Astronomy" in 1909

"Now it is a fact not generally known that the crescent moon always appears "upon its back" in spring, near the vernal equinox, and "upon its end" in autumn, near the autumnal equinox."

[link to books.google.com]

Weird. Seems like something in our orbit has changed since 1909. We're 3 months early for our moon to be "on its back".

I'm guessing those who lived by the stars in 1909 know more than a professional debunker in 2010.

Thanks for playing.
