But likely in this scenario... No real doom at all, might be a brief period where we see some more aurora's than usual in strange places. Asides from that, it might just weaken our magnetic defenses ever so slightly for a little while, but not really enough to change the needed force that a CME would need to wipe out our power. Mass animal extinction... something there yes, animals and birds might take a little while to adjust to the switch in magnetic field lines and migrate to the wrong place, but not really mass extinction, just a few confused animals and birds for a while, a few dying of starvation or cold or heat. But they're not stupid and a lot will recognise that they are heading in the wrong direction quickly enough. Human die off... Nope. Magnetism/electromagnetism is one of the biggest mysteries out there. As an example: on 10/7/2007 somebody posted a thread here by the name "Here is how it will happen....". I just used the search engine but I cannot find it anymore. I kept the original text on my hard disk. It somewhat conveys a feeling of what to expect during such enormous events. Here it is: Seriously, 2mm plastic sheeting, duct tape, survival packs, porta-potty, bottled water and wind-up clock are at the ready! The family has been instructed in what to do. Here is how it will happen: There will be no warning. The entire planet will shudder and all living creatures will feel it and will be astonished. All electric devices will cease functioning. For a moment, there will be total silence upon the planet. Having never experienced such a silence, a great fear will overwhelm you and you will be unable to move. As the poles begin to move you will become disoriented. If you are standing you will drop to the ground. If you are sitting or lying you will feel a want to crawl or slump to the ground. It will be as if you want desperately to cling to the earth. And indeed this is exactly what you will be doing. Curl into a fetal position. You will be able to do little else. You will not be able to stand upright for the next 6 hours. You may hear thunderings, loud crackling static-like noises, and what sounds like wind blowing. You may see lightenings, colors, and the sky might seem to be on fire. You will have incomprehensible thoughts, as if trapped under a tremendous waterfall of cascading ideas. You must try to maintain a perspective of ´self´. You must keep an intact ´ego´. When the reversal is complete, if you have survived while outdoors you need to get inside somestructure. If you are indoors, stay there. Noxious gasses will have vented from the planet and you will need to stay indoors for THREE DAYS. Make sure all doors and windows are closed. You may want to stuff towels or such things in any ´cracks´ around doors and other places. The sun will be partially obscured for a time. Most likely you will not feel like eating anything but drink a little water if there is some available. Take the three days to ´collect´ yourself. After the three days the gasses will largely disperse. Many have perished. There is much work to be done. Although many devices and much equipment has been destroyed, technology has not been lost, just severely disrupted. Some ´localities´ will remain relatively intact and this will be a starting point. For instance, if an electric generating facility is in your area, the people who had worked there need to go back there and try to get power restored to the local area. Of course this will require getting supplies of fuel to the facility and many other things. All of this needs to be done. If you had worked in or managed a warehouse where food or other goods are stored, you need to go there and see about distributing them. Of course you will not be ´paid´ for doing this, but after all, what would you do with it? Repair and rebuilding will be the order of the day for this generation. Near endless possibilities have opened up for your culture and society. Choose wisely. For some time after the reversal there will be many people who seem quiet or even incoherent, or who just sit and cry. DO NOT CHASTISE THEM FOR THIS. Quoting: OTOCMight be a little confusing, sorry about that. ------- A little preface This is of course under the assumption that at the very least there is some uranium down in the core. ------- A secondary thought on the core: Logic realistically states that the very heaviest element should be at center (possibly, even probably magnetic in nature as the magnetic elements would have slowly forced the core out (if it indeed was magnetic to begin with) due the the strength of magnetism in comparison to gravity), followed then by the heaviest/strongest magnetic element, then progressively lighter/weaker magnetic or magnetised elements, followed then by heaviest remaining elements getting progressively lighter moving away from the core. Why not elements we have never seen before down in there as well? But then of course I can explain the magnetic anomalies and none antipodal magnetic poles very simply by stating this: The strongest magnetic elements have begun to group on one "side" of the core due to the churning and mixing process that the inner core spin (and nuclear explosions/fusion and diffraction of lighter elements given off) causes. But then again it might be iron or anything else. ------- The pole flip. I would of simple thought that it's a result of slightly more magnetic material being over on one side due to a nuclear explosion from radioactive decay. Drawing more magnetic material to one side before it slowly trys to center itself again after it's sphere'd back up properly. Giving that one side a more intense magnetic field which is overpowering the other side to become the overall dominant magnetic field but also being slightly repelled by the weaker other magnetic side of the core pushing the two propogation points (magnetic poles) closer together. The dominant magnetic field now will fall away as the repressed magnetic field becomes dominant and a polarity reversal will happen in mere minutes with just a quick flick from e.g. Northerly dominant to southerly dominant magnetic fields. Basically the "southerly" (or "left" (example)) side of the core just overpowers the "Northerly" (or "right) side of the core magnetically and the north based becomes supressed and the south based dominant. The SAA at the moment is where the poles of the southerly dominant magnetic field will rise up and spread out to the geographic poles (or around them) and around japan and east russia/siberia is where the magnetic poles will fall away. The speed of this and the spread of the magnetic poles or even the eventual position is subject to the position and the fight between the magnetic cores. ------ An after thought. I sometimes forget how far I've travelled off of the known path, and become lost in a sea of concurrent ideas. The reality of which at the time seems fine. But then as I come across the road again to find that it's merely a single improbability out of oh so many as at the end of the road of current proven knowledge many many paths lie ahead of us.
