But here's my counter theory, You won't even notice it's changed if you don't have a compass.
That's not a theory, that's a feeling. It's as valid as any other feeling.
1. A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena.
By definition that is a theory.
