I sent an email to West Virginia Senator Erik Wells with my response to his proposed bill
Hello Senator,
I'm going to just straight off the bat say that I disagree with this Bill you're proposing.
First, let me say, before making this Bill, why do the Youth not go to school? If they're absent (unexcused absence) or absence excused there has to be a reason. Doesn't mean bad parenting, doesn't mean bad kids either. Why not look to the school & their curriculum before you go after the parents? I'm not a parent myself, but I'd research more into it before going to the lengths of making a bill. I don't know if you have "If the kid doesn't go to school and make the state and schools money then I'm gonna have the state take away the parent's D.L. so they can't make money to pay taxes to the state either." If a kid doesn't go to school there is a reason and you all should research more. You do know they could take the BUS or CARPOOL right? Raising a kid is a responsibility. You pay the government and state money to have a Driver's License, so if you take away licenses you should refund that money that they paid. Maybe a parent doesn't like how the school is teaching their kid? Maybe they want to HOMESCHOOL their kid? Or maybe, the kid doesn't want to go to school and put up with silly rules to keep them from asking questions, because if they ask questions, they have detention. Why do parents pay schools to teach their kids? Because they're too lazy to teach them themselves. Those who HOMESCHOOL their kids, know the style of learning that the kid works best in, they can adjust his/her environment to one that makes the kid comfortable.

Here's what I propose that's on my mind. Here in California, we have the CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam) and a test known as the S.T.A.R testing system. S.T.A.R test students on the main subjects of math, science, english, and history, while the CAHSEE focuses on Math and English. I'm not sure what W.V. has for their high school testing, but, for kids who want to take the GED way out, or even Home Schooling, perhaps, combine a STAR test, with the CAHSEE-esque test, so that way, the kids/adolescents in High School, or ANY educational facility STILL get the education that the rest of the state gets in their curriculum. That way they can graduate, without being looked at as having an "EASY" education.

Thanks for your time,

Tony

His bill he is proposing states that if a child misses 10 days of school, unexcused absences, then the parent gets their driver's license taken away.

Right. I bet you this senator is going to take one look at it and delete it. Although I'm copyrighting the last paragraph. Wouldn't want him turning that into a Bill and take the credit.

Education starts in the home. If parents show a disregard for education then the child will most likely have the same attitude. If people want to be ignorant there is nothing a school can do.

My sister is scared to death over ^this^. Her kids make their own school schedule, meaning they never go to school.
I guess they have better things to do.

either that or they just don't learn anything. I know some classes in high school the teacher's don't even teach. One of my teachers would sit around and tell stories all class, and most of us would pretty much excuse ourselves to the bathroom, just like in college lol

your sister shouldn't be scared. For one this will probably never make it on to a ballot, and two, they can't tell her how to raise her own kids or make her lose her license.
