Quoting: CrazyJarheadSix people were killed on Saturday, including a nine-year-old girl. But it was the fact that the target was a Democratic congresswoman - who is fighting for her life - which has sparked such a furious row, not, as one might expect, over the nature of America’s gun laws, but over the vitriolic nature of its politics. But it was the fact that the target was a Democratic congresswoman - who is fighting for her life - which has sparked such a furious row, not, as one might expect, over the nature of America’s gun laws, but over the vitriolic nature of its politics. Defenders of gun rights like to say it’s not the gun that’s dangerous, but the user. Now the argument swirling across the U.S. is whether it’s not the user but violent political rhetoric that may have ultimately pulled the trigger. In short, did the killer Jared Loughner - who has a history of mental instability and has made a series of bizarre postings on the internet - go out looking to kill because political voices told him to? And here all this time I thought it was my trip to a bone and joint specialist on January 5th for consultation and advice on a "trigger finger" problem I am currently dealing with that inspired somebody's decision to use that "political voice." My GANGSTALKER. Anybody else out there nursing a TRIGGER FINGER??? Could the inflammatory language used by some Right-wing politicians - in particular, Sarah Palin - have encouraged the killer to act as he did? That’s the question at the heart of a febrile political blame game that started even before the most basic details had emerged about the background and possible motivation of the gunman. Already it has drawn in politicians, commentators, police and even the families of the victims. Gabrielle Giffords was a Democrat and much - but not all - of the badly spelt, incoherent YouTube jumble that passed for the politics of her attacker was broadly ‘Right-wing’. As a result, many liberal commentators and establishment figures have leapt at the opportunity to blame conservative politicians. The rush to make political capital out of a mass shooting shows just how nasty U.S. politics has become. Under Barack Obama, America is more polarised than it has been for 40 years. Conservatives have come to despise liberals, and vice versa, with an intensity the like of which few can recall. Right-wing anger with the high-spending Obama administration’s handling of the financial crisis, a weak economy and high unemployment has prompted thousands of ordinary Americans to break away from conventional two-party politics to support the Tea Party movement with its call for small government. As the name (a reference to the 1773 Boston Tea Party) implies, Tea Party supporters see their movement as rooted in the rebellion against George III, and the language has inevitably been full of military metaphor. A TRIGGER FINGER is the result of an INFLAMED tendon. Clever. |

The comments section is interesting, IE: The reasons for this lunatic's behaviour are probably very complex. Nevertheless, that does not mean that he was not influenced by the Right-wing vitriol coming from the American Right and reaching such a crescendo of hatred in recent years that demeans a nation purporting to believe in democracy and free speech. It seems that those on the American Right - like Palin, Bush, Cheney, etc., only support free speech if you subscribe wholly to their views. Otherwise, as Dubya himself once said:, "if you are not with us you are against us!" This is not the hallmark of a healthy democratic society where tolerance of other peoples views are an essential prerequisite. - Keith, Ilford, Essex, 12/1/2011 10:47 |

Regardless of political affiliations, it should be obvious to anyone that she lacks the (ideal) qualities needed for the presidency. What's 'sickening' here is not the political capital Palin's opponents might make but her simple refusal to accept that she made a mistake; Gabrielle Giffords' own statements about Palin's '20' campaign reinforce Palin's lack of judgement. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1224921 Canada 01/12/2011 08:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | She was stupid to make things worse by trying to claim that Quoting: DrPostmanthose were "surveyor" marks on that map. She's even been quoted as saying they were "bulls-eyes" right after the election. All she had to do was show some courage and come out and say that this was tragic and she mourns with the families of the victims but no, she has to try to make herself a victim too using surrogates to do her dirty work. This is not someone with executive abilities. No wonder she quit halfway through her first term as governor. BINGO. It's not what she did or didn't say or write originally it's how she dealt with it afterward. THIS is what counts. Both sides wrote stupid things - she and the guy at daily KOS said really, really dumb shit. But the DK guy at least admitted that he posted something irresponsible, acknowledged his idiocy and expressed a degree of shame over it. If her reaction within the first day or two had been the same she probably would have been forgiven and it would have been quickly forgotten. As usual, she dug her own grave and proved once again she's not fit to run a soda stand, never mind an entire country. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1224921 Canada 01/12/2011 08:30 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Why are TPTB so scared of Sarah Palin? Is she the one that will expose them? Is she the one that will show us what theynhave been doing for years? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1101793If you are on GLP, then you know why she needs to be President. TPTB aren't afraid of her at all. It's people like ME - who didn't my spend teenage years watching 'hot librarian' pornos - and can see how stupid she really is and how little interest she has in anything beyond what will get attention for her. She would not have got anywhere without the help of the elites to begin with but I guess even they initially underestimated the degree of both her fame-seeking (anything to be on TV!) and her complete lack of sense. Just because tptb may now be wary of her (they wouldn't want Lindsay Lohan or Paris Hilton going into politics either) doesn't mean she'd make a good leader. |

For a politician operating in a nation with a history of political assassinations, Palin should have known better than to employ the language/imagery of the gun. It's really as simple as that. |
