HERO police officer swam nearly one kilometre out to sea to save a 30-year-old woman from drowning at Naval Base yesterday. Senior Constable Anthony Van Andel, 38, battled giant waves to reach the woman, who has Down syndrome, after her kayak capsized in rough ocean swell.
Police Inspector Mal Anderson said the woman was paddling close to shore when strong winds blew her away from the beach.
Several bystanders tried unsuccessfully to rescue her, but she was blown further out to sea.To the dismay of onlookers the kayak capsized and the woman disappeared from view.
At 5.30pm officers from Kwinana police station arrived at the scene and came across found the woman's distraught family. Sen-Const. Van Andel then swam out rescued the woman.
The woman suffered mild hypothermia and was taken to hospital by her family.
