Perhaps there are many small changes, insignificant unto themselves that lay dormant until they reach a critical mass, at which time they gather, organize and express themselves as a new order of beings. This reminds me of an article I read wherein the author states his belief that black holes were the phenomena that initiated the creation of all matter. Supposedly, at first after the big bang, there was just a cloud of undifferentiated gas and dust, then it started to gather and congeal in places, but this process was slow and unorganized until in some places, enough matter gathered together than critical mass was reached and a spontaneous nuclear explosion occurred, creating the first black holes. The gravitational influence of these black holes caused other clumps of matter to gather and spin, until smaller clumps of congealed matter ignited into the first stars. In that way, order came from chaos and the structure of the universe, known as the Galactic Web arose. Somewhere within this structure, or perhaps within all of it, is the force that creates these torsion waves that organize DNA into more and more complex sequences, forcing all organisms into more and more complex versions of their previous selves. Perhaps it is the chicken that came first, having been transformed from a lesser creature so that it could lay the egg. This would explain the lack of fossils of intermediate creatures, because no such creatures ever existed. There was no extinction, rather there was a living transmogrification into a higher form. That would also explain why some scientists believe that as much as 95% of our DNA is dormant, or "junk", because it is just turned off until it is needed.
