Re: Birds Drop Dead On Plane!!!
They were used in mines due to their advanced respiration anatomy. Unlike mammals who are "2 stroke" breathers all birds are "4 stroke breathers" They get so much more oxygen (and everything else) out of the air this way.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1157608

Being a 4 stroke breather could explain why the dog was not harmed. If they passed through some noxious gas or something, the birds would get a much larger dose.

I know, you (and the other poster) is right but what gas? No airline would have some sort of "gas or vapor" that could leak into sealed cabin would they? They have jet fuel and hydraulics, all fluids. No reports of an electrical problem (burned insulation). Nitrogen might be used in a strut assembly of some kind but it's non-toxic OTHER then it displacing oxygen.

Any flight-heads out there?

Just found this. New theory on bird deaths. Very scary if it proves to be more than a theory.

Not that long. Less than a week.

But the dog is fine! That means the oxygen levels were okay.

Exactly! What the heck is in the air??
 Quoting: Earth Cries

Not a vet here but the birds' lungs may be a lil more sensitive to pressure and oxygen drops.

Just a thought.

Pressure VERY LIKELY, oxygen levels no. They are 2 or 3 times more efficient at scraping the last bit of oxygen molecules (and other things) out of the air.

It could be toxic gases of some sort. The OPs link does have some validity. Most modern high altitude aircraft are designed to allow cabin air to leak out (controlled leak) while gathering outside (pure, ((it's good why filter)) and untainted) air to feed back into the cabin. If they passed through an area of hydrogen cyanide gas the passengers MAY not have noticed but it quite possibly may have tanked the birds.

PROBLEMS WITH THIS...
As it refers to birds at near ground level or normal bird flight.

Birds on the ground fly at MUCH LOWER altitudes then jets. At most a few hundred feet for most of the killed species. If hydrogen cyanide gas is present at just a few hundred feet ie 20-40 stories HUMAN affects should be there. That stuff doesn't just stay there, it should fall like any heavier gas should.

Something is missing from the question.

Now this is a weird one!
Foods toxic to parrots
* Chocolate[11]
* Avocado[11]
* Caffeine[11]
* Alcohol[11]
* Apple seeds (as they contain cyanide)[12]
* Peach pit (contains cyanide)
* Cherry pit (contains cyanide)
* store-bought vegetables, possible chemicals from produce spritzers, farm pesticides/fertilizers, artificial dyes on many store-bought vegetables not listed in ingredients section
[link to en.wikipedia.org]

one possibility they were accidentally fed something they shouldn't of had .. a few minutes worth of bad turbulence might scare some of them to death with fright but probably not all of them .. looks like maybe 50 of the birds did survive?

You read the article. These were LIVE CAUGHT ADULTS. No one would have fed them any of those foods. They were wild caught bird whose first opinion of humans is having a net thrown over you. Have some starbucks and apple seeds?

Something else, has to be. Air pressure loss perhaps.

They were used in mines due to their advanced respiration anatomy. Unlike mammals who are "2 stroke" breathers all birds are "4 stroke breathers" They get so much more oxygen (and everything else) out of the air this way.

Ohh and look, it's an African Grey in the example.

Damn shame they died, one the smartest birds on the planet.

The seeds, pits and cyanide bs is a thread in itself.

Does that mean mammals have more torque and smoke? Bwahaha. Sorry, couldn't resist. Sure makes you wonder what's going on.

Yes we do, they just have there trade offs for flight. Maybe it's the fuel in/poop out ratio that they win every time. I like to think of them (stealing an old ufo quote) as the sports model of animals. ZERO redundant systems, tiny fuel storage (low fat), hollow bones with NO FORGIVENESS FOR FRACTURES OR BREAKS, but they gain flight.

Re: Birds Drop Dead On Plane!!!
It's very likely radiation was the cause. Even a high C class solar flare is hazardous for air travel. Neither a hole in the magnetosphere nor excessive cosmic radiation is required for radiation dangers in high-altitude flights especially to small mammals like birds.
