Yes, and if they hadn´t, they would have starved to death. It isn´t, perhaps, as clear in the movie -- but the book makes clear that the ape man species was dying out due to starvation. The ape man needed the killer instinct in order to survive -- in order to figure out it could kill the pigs for food and to war with the other ape man clan to secure the resources.
