Re: Seriously...has there EVER been a better movie than the 1979 classic "Alien"?
It came out when I was nine years old, a couple of the "cool" kids claimed they saw it and talked about how good it was, so I begged and pleadded with my father to take me to see it, I got told know till I actually got a spanking( yes youcould still spank your kids those days).
So I did one better. I was supposed to go see a different movie with a friends parents and suck into alien instead.
It fucked me up.
It scared me so bad I couldn't hardly sleep for a week.
And almost wet the bed because I didn't want to walk down the dark hallway to the bathroom.
I kept the lights on and refused to go outside after dark for months.
I love that movie now, but it freaked me out went I was nine.
Never did tell my parents.

It had the same effect on me. The only other movie that terrorized me was Jaws.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1196052

Oh yes! Jaws was a goddamn horrific film for me as kid too.

Some critics list Jaws as the all time best horror movie...you can't go wrong listing Jaws or Alien as number one.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1018942

Well I didn't learn my lesson very well, jaws scared me shitless too, right before alien, but my parents took me to that one, when the fuckin head popped out of the hole in the boat! Didn't want to even sit on the toilet.
And the pool was out of the question.

Re: Seriously...has there EVER been a better movie than the 1979 classic "Alien"?
OK one more at my expense,
I was about ninteen or twenty around the time I saw alien 2.
I thought I was all grown up and the trauma of jaws and alien was in my past and behind me, too maucho to be scared now!
Well....
I worked in a wercking yard as a kid, I had a 68 big block chevelle then and it was built. We'll over four hundred and fifty horse.
Any way I just got out of the theater and went back to the shop to finish sticking in the new Muncie.
The shop was closed up from the outside and only the back doors leading out to the back of the yard were open, straight out to all those broken twisted hunks of cars there in the dark, I kept looking out there as I would walk around the front of the car thinking about the movie and how it would be a perfect place for one of those damn monsters to hide.
I was all alone and it was around 1am, my imagination was getting the better of me and I was laughing at my self, as I walked around the frontof the car again, between total darkness and the car, I stepped on the air powered rachet wrench, at it letout a shrill high pitched shreek.
I just knew that a fuckin alien was going to get me.
I jumped and screamed like a scared little girl.
Almost pissed my self.
After I regained some composure I closed the shop door, left the lights on in the shop and went home, fuck he car, my hands were shaking to bad to hold the wrench anymore.
Never told my girlfriend that either.

Re: Seriously...has there EVER been a better movie than the 1979 classic "Alien"?
I wouldn't know. I still refuse to watch it. Never have, never will.

I read part of the book and that was more than enough to let me know I would never, ever watch the movie.

I do not enjoy fear at all, and I do not subject myself to it on purpose.

So yes, there are multitudes of better movies than this one. You know, movies I'd actually WATCH, unlike this one.

Re: Seriously...has there EVER been a better movie than the 1979 classic "Alien"?
I'm embarrassed to say how many times I have seen it. For 1979 it was made well. Could be made today and still scare the shit out of people.
 Quoting: Punk-A$$ets

NO! Couldn't be made today. The pace, the cigarettes (in space!) Weaver's youth, John Hurt's skill, just the damn sophistication. Everything has to be overblown these days or else it is ignored. Alien looked and felt real.
Until Alien, Jaws and The Exorcist came out, "Wait Until Dark" was considered pretty scary. A menacing Alan Arkin.
Just had a revival of The Forbidden Planet, Leslie Nielson, "monsters of the id" and all.

I was a freshman in high school when this movie came out and my dad took me to see it. I swear I was clutching his arm and practically sitting in his lap I was soooo scared. I don't know what it was about that movie but it was damn scary. Remember when they make the robot crew member talk? The liquid in his throat were disgusting.

Yeah Alien was ahead of its time, even the look and feel. Watch it today it still has a modern look and feel to it.

Agreed, if it was made today, they would probably put in a Jar-Jar Binks like character, or cast Will Smith as the leading man.

wow I guess I never really thought about it being made in 79. I remember watching it when I was really little.

Its funny we still have this VHS tape recorded from when it was on TV probly from the early 90's. All the old commercials crack me up.

Even better than ALIENS (2)?

Remember Bill Paxton when the alien crashes their shuttle craft and their trapped with a million "xenomorphs" in the nuclear reactor?

"OH, WE'RE IN SOME PRETTY SHIT NOW, MAN! GAME OVER, MAN! GAME OVER!" laugh

Or that line that's always quotes, "Let nuke 'em from orbit...it's the only way to be sure!"

Another dozen great lines in the second one....Incidetally, ALIENS was directed by James Cameron I think....He also did "THE ABYSS" and "AVATAR"....

If you like high tech thrillers,

Deja Vu with Denzel Washington was a killer movie...Amazing time travel theme.

Swordfish - John Revolta but entertaining and tech-ish.

Jumper - 'bout these guys that can transport themselves to anywhere on the globe and how they try to catch them... Great scenes all over the world and amazing action.

Knight and Day, new one if you can stomach Tom Cruise is pretty good action....

anyway..
