Sex is always a good idea.
Making babies however...

a deformatity that is in reaction to a change in environment IS evolution.

No.

 Quoting: Halcyon Dayz, FCD

If a species survives an environmental change, would you call that adaptation or evolution?
Whats the difference really...
Would there not be deformations along the line?

Some people have tails.....grind on that for a few.

I beg to differ. If you read the article the changes that were displayed were most likely a direct result of the change of environment during the fertilization and developing process. The fish mutated simultaneously to better fit the environment it assumed it would be living in. This gives weight to the idea that evolution can happen nearly instantaneously in a species when the environment changes dramatically.
 Quoting: ~Stormy~

Interesting story

However when the time has arrived and we are impregnating and giving birth in space.Wont the artificial star treck type gravity needed for practical purposes on space craft counter the mutation.

long periods of weightlessness already cause problems to humans thus why such an artificial gravity is needed before people start having space kids

You remember this back in 08?

According to Russian news agency Novosti, baby cockroaches conceived aboard a satellite in September have apparently grown up to be faster and tougher than their terrestrial brethren.

The first creatures ever conceived in space also grew more quickly than ordinary Earth-bred cockroaches.

[link to www.newscientist.com]

The second and third batches did not show these peculiarities of growth and physiology," the scientist noted.

Re: Scientists say sex is space may not be a good idea.
AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

why is everyone talking about wacking off in space and tits in space and sperm flying around in space????

in thunder and lightning are angels bowling, then comets and asteroids are angels blowing loads.

ANYWAY, out of all seriousness:

NASA has already reported and PROVED:::

-Due to radiation in space, the lifespan is severely lessened.

-Due to NO gravity the fluids in your body do not follow the NORMAL forced downward, fight back up routine caused by Earth's UNIQUE gravity to our CARBON based bodies. In space your body fluids are still FIGHTING to pump upwards, yet NOT being FORCED back downwards - resulting in bloating of the upper body, excess fluid in the brain, heart beat arrhythmia(sp?), etc, etc.

-Due to NO MAGNETIC FIELD, sleep patterns are SEVERELY HAMPERED - even with strong sedatives many astronauts report only 2 maybe 3 hours of sleep. Brain functions start to behave abnormally and the normal electrical pulses throughout the body (nerves etc) start to behave abnormally. Short term and -possibly- long term memory is affected gradually.

-Due to NO gravity, bone density and muscle mass is gradually degraded. "After a 3-4 month trip into space, it takes about 2–3 years to regain lost bone density." (Quote from [link to en.wikipedia.org] )

There is lots more, but they are the main few I've read about a bit - all can be found through google and even wikipedia.

*ALSO* From soooooooooooo many reports, it is said that the Van Allen Belt is too irradiated for humans to be able to pass though unaffected - apparently you'd need solid lead shielding AT LEAST 6 feet thick to protect from radiation

***which throws in the question of the whole 'moon landing' seeing as they would of had to pass through the Van Allen Belt in their Pepsi-can thick sealed airplane - which is said to be IMPOSSIBLE in those cercumstances***

Once again - I am NOT a religious person, but I do not deny religion - anyone after truth IS a true christian/jew/hindu/muslim/etc/etc/etc.

It's just the ORGANIZATION as a whole - all with the ONE RULE "It's our way or NO way". **BUT NOT EVERYONE CAN SAY THAT AND BE TELLING THE TRUTH???????**

But what i'm getting at, is that it MAY SEEM like the Van Allen Belt POSSIBLY blankets the Earth - and the ONLY REASONABLE EXPLANATION ***if this WERE the case*** would be that the Van Allen Belt was PUT THERE to STOP US from LEAVING THE PLANET.

I know it seems stupid BUT my reasoning is:

- There SEEMS to be enough truth that LOW ORBIT SPACE TRAVEL is POSSIBLE - space flights, space station, satellite repair, etc, etc. The Hubble Telescope repair is one such event.

- BUT why did every country on the planet suddenly DROP the idea of LIVING on the MOON - just because the USA said 'nah, we had enough now' it seems everyone else stopped as well - but wasn't Russia 'competing' ANYWAY STILL?? Wouldn't Japan or China want their NAME on the map even more gloriously???

What HAPPENED - EVEN TODAY KIDS DREAM OF GOING TO THE MOON!!!!!! So why is the Moon such a 'taboo' place to colonise?????

- The idea of colonising Mars. That was funny - instead of going for a walk down the block to the Moon and starting there, they give the impression that they will need 50 or 100 years and trillions and trillions of dollars for research and development to travel to a dead planet trillions and whatever light years of parsecs or whatever away???

- NASA are just TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO secretive with their satellite photos - ONLY releasing what they WANT - some disappearing forever - some totally photo-shopped - some photos so grainy and black and white from a camera that's supposed to be millions of dollars advanced - THE LIST GOES ON.

Why HIDE ANYTHING AT ALL??????

Does anyone know of Mount Rushmore (joking) you can take high def photos from every angle, from any location, anytime you want - detailed photos from it's construction can be found with minute detail as to see peoples pupils in their eyes. You wanna know why you can do these things? BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING TO HIDE.

With all of NASA's secrecy, I believe them as much as I believed mum and dad when they said the presents were from some fat dude I never met. At least mum and dad came clean and eventually put 'from mum and dad' on the label.

Yes, that is interesting BUT they are cockroaches NOT HUMANS!

Cockroaches can ALSO survive a nuclear fallout.

I've read that cockroaches were here BEFORE dinosaurs and will still be here AFTER humans.

So, technically, unless they make a human-cockroach hybrid DNA that isn't harmful or rejected by our bodies, it is of no benefit.

Cockroaches could probably survive the irradiated vacuum of space in a paper cup as long as it had it's scuba tank on and large picnic basket.

As for humans, the radiation from space - amongst other issues listed in above post - FORCES us to withdraw back to Earth for safety. If we didn't, and could survive all other issues in space, we would most likely gradually mutate - possibly become sterile, loose certain brain functions or personality traits, poisoning of the blood and water in the body, kidney mutation, etc, etc.

If we were meant to fly, we'd have wings. That's why plane's crash - it's not natural, therefore it's MORE likely to break down (although due to the number of bird deaths lately, the odds are it's probably safer for birds to take a plane). Plus planes need maintenance EVERY TIME they land. A bird needs none.

If we were meant to live in space, we would have an atmosphere, magnetosphere, an endless supply of oxygen/food/water, a bit of room to move around, some entertainment to....... gee, it kinda sounds like we WERE born in space - on a SPACESHIP called EARTH...

Too bad we're trashing the fuck out of it before we take the time to learn it's POTENTIAL.

Sounds like you'd do well in a prison somewhere - six months in their and see how far abstaining from 'sex' gets you.

It's either you in them, or all of them in you hahahahahaha!!!

That's what happens when you base your life on your sexual urges - you get distracted and NEVER see the bigger picture.

Prisoners and most of society are so much like rats it's not funny.

You all run around (but believe that it's 'important work':).

You all eat and drink and then take a shit and piss nearby.

You all run around humping each other to the point where in the next 100 years there will only be one race of mixed everything from everyone humping everyone like rats.

You all try to 'get out' but quickly give up and go back to whatever takes the boredom away.

Yet, unlike rats, you all fear the unknown.

I don't believe in Christianity as it is, but I do believe that if Jesus DID live, he wouldn't have said 'HATE Satan' - he would have said 'LOVE Satan as you do my Father and forgive Satan and Save Satan, but NEVER hurt in the name of Satan or Idolise Satan or Worship Satan'.

The 'Holy Trinity' is MOST LIKELY God, Jesus and Satan - BECAUSE if God didn't want Satan to be, then God would make Satan not be.

God gives you the choice, Jesus shows one way, Satan shows the other - but in reality ALL ROADS LEAD THE SAME PLACE. Wherever that be.

Once again, i'm not Christian it's just that almost everyone 'somewhat' recognizes and understands the basic concepts.

Evil begets evil. If you HATE evil, you are only FUELING it.

If you LOVE evil (not do evil, but love that it is a creation of God) then you negate it - because by LOVING something, how can there be HATE??????????

no sorry the fish don't mutate in space, the reason the phenotype is different is because of the different environment, not mutations in the DNA.

DNA does not change just because of differences in gravity, radiation may do the trick, but not low gravity.

yeah, this is just evolution adapting to 0 gravity
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1175267

right! but the changes were instantaneous. Science would have us believe it takes thousands if not millions of years but this gives support to the idea that given drastic changes it can be instant.
 Quoting: ~Stormy~

No...Most mutations in evolution take place in one or more offspring. Then it spreads throughout a species.
Evolutionary mutations are genetic and benifical.
The "mutations" in the article are caused by a wieghtless enviornment and run across the entire experiment.
It's not evolution, it's a deformity.
The genes of the fish weren't changed or mutated...just the conditions the embryos were developed.
Odds are if you took the egg or sperm from one of those fish and mated it with a normal Earth born fish on Earth, the offspring would be normal.

These are the comments that make me saddest in life.

The complexity of JUST the human body is beyond comprehension.

Yet all most can think of is fucking their hand or any woman that 'fits' their idea of 'beauty' - regardless of intelligence.

Yep all this creation gone to sitting on the couch with a beer watching sport with moron 'friends' yelling at the spouse to get more sausages and telling the kids to shut up and go outside and play.

God would be proud:)

Unfortunately, as any decent scientist can point out, only lower classed social evolution (ie lack of real knowledge) humans watch sport - the whole competition thing is still stuck in there from the days of gladiators.

The competitiveness, fights, slutty 'cheerleaders', blatant advertising and herd mentality fit nicely with what you could call ignorant barbarian 'caveman' behavior.
