Quoting: IrdooooomedSo, like with Santa Claus? Something like that, only it's a psychological expression of your subconscious. So no not really. |

twitter this (OP) User ID: 1241944 United States 01/24/2011 10:00 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | And say that you really believe that you do have a relationship with someone you never met and with whom you can't communicate back and forth with - but then, one day, a miracle occurs and that person shows up at your bedside and starts to talk to you - BUT - says things that go against what you believe or what you believe that person would ever say? Would that mean that you really didn't know that person? Or that you created that person in your mind to suit your beliefs and your beliefs about that person? Or would you say that that person is simply not the person you have a relationship with? An imposter? You see how confusing this can get, even after meeting the person? And wouldn't that seem to suggest that the only way to know for sure that you have a relationship with an invisible person is in NEVER meeting them? And isn't that sort of religion in a nutshell? Anonymous Coward User ID: 1167419 United States 01/24/2011 10:05 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | AND WITH SOMEONE WHO MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE EVEN EXISTED? Quoting: twitter thisHOW DOES THAT WORK, EXACTLY? I mean, we usually think of relationships as having personal contact - seeing, hearing, feeling...and then of course - by sharing time, doing things, going places, talking things out, arriving at understandings together. How does that all work when the other person has been dead for 2,000 years? AND - you never met them? Obviously you will never know what they sound like or look like - which are pretty necessary ingredients to begin to know someone - I mean, you have to be able to recognize them first, I would submit - to tell them apart from others. If you can't even pick the person out of a line up, then what do you really have? I suppose you can say you have a relationship with anyone from history, including Hitler or Grouch Marx. Would you really know the difference? Be glad you didn't know him, then you couldn't complain how you don't like the way he does his hair. |

YOU'RE one in a million, here. Next, kind of poetic. You should consider poetry. Next, I understood it completely. Finally, I would whole heartedly agree with you about 340 lifetimes ago. I know what you all will say - that it's via the "holy spirit" that we are given to, and open to, "receiving Christ" into "our hearts". The holy spirit - the invisible mist that is the grace of god - that goes out and only lands on Christians......so that only Christians can know god..... Yeah..... OK......... "Life. If you can't even pick the person out of a line up, then what do you really have? I suppose you can say you have a relationship with anyone from history, including Hitler or Grouch Marx. Would you really know the difference? Why do you still remember your ancestors who died 200 years ago by claiming their name or your heritage? Why do you rely on a 200 year old document and quote it in court everyday? Why are you required to learn about people who existed over 2,000 years ago like oh--Alexander the Great?--and you get an "A" for acknowledging their existence whether or not they actually did? Because you BELIEVE they did. Why do we believe there is a planet called Uranus on the edge of our solar system, we've never really seen or been to? We have only the word of scientists that it exists and pictures shown us saying it is real. Why do we plan for futures we don't know exist? For children and grandchildren we may never have? Why do we get excited about pieces of paper from processed trees and plants with pictures of dead men on them we've never even met, that promise gold and silver that doesn't exist, take those bits of paper and ask merchants to honor them for services we fully expect to receive. Why? Because we believe that that paper has value. Just as we believe what mama said, that we got our eyes from a great great great grandma named Rosie we will never meet and don't really know existed other than by faith in mama's word. That picture can be Rosie, then again, it could be Sally Smithers who looked just like her they say.... |
