My compass is not only off 30 degrees but so is my boil temp! Grab a pan! Garb a compass! Report back here! Forgot to add...as I was testing the boil temp I noticed the sun was rising and shining in my west window! No suprise because last night while checking to see how far off my compass was the moon was upside down! LOL...i can't stop laughing. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1064613No Well that's a hasty answer.. Maybe try a neighbor on each floor.. then get back to us with the findings!! |

I'm at about 500 ft elevation (Austin TX) I must admit, I don't have a long history of boiling water and measuring the temperature (or even a short history) ... is this odd ... I'm off by ~ 11 degrees ... meat thermometer I'm using is accurate/tested |

Which is likely to be where Opie is. it's funny that you're laughing so hard tardo... regardless of what the OP says, you have zero understanding of science. The boiling point of water is directly a function of the atmospheric pressure. Everyone who wasn't sleeping through high school physics knows that. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 822475 Canada 01/25/2011 02:00 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | OP WATER WILL ALWAYS BOIL AT 100 DEGREE Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1242999THE PROBLEM IS UR TERMOMETER well out of curiosity, I went to this website and entered my barometer reading of 30.2 and altitude of about 5600 feet. and it said it would boil at 212.465. I then boiled some water and used my candy thermometer, just an orginary glass one, and it said 213. close enough considering. Also just to check my barometer, it read with the reading posted on weatherunderground for Denver. This is the boiling point link I used, [link to www.csgnetwork.com] I have in the past several years ago seen water boil here at 198 in north metro area of Denver. Today, as above it was just as expected according to the website above under my current conditions of barometer. The water used was filtered thru an ordinary refrigerator filter pitcher. I used 5600 feet as an estimate, because I am up on a hill pretty far above the known mile high city point where Denver measured as being the mile high city. Some place in the city were are 5280 feet above sea level. I am satisfied based on my above experiment everything is ok where I live today. |

Every weather station in the world reports the atmospheric pressure daily. Are you saying they're all wrong? FYI, the Barometric pressures are corrected to sea level for public consumption. Everyone that visits up here in god's country is amazed at the pressure being the same here as it is in the flat lands. But you are right, the pressure has not changed and neither has the boiling point of water. Boiling an egg at 173 degrees would take forever. Even at 196 it takes 10 minutes to get a hard boiled egg. I believe the temp was around the normal 100 degrees, at least it felt that way! Thanks OP, good find! And good PIN mods! |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 664728 New Zealand 01/25/2011 03:19 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I am at sea level. I just boiled water and watched the temperature on an industrial thermometer (belongs to husband) and a digital candy thermometer (belongs to me) The bubbles started to leave the bottom of the pan at 60 degrees C (140 F) I stirred to disperse the bubbles (did not stop the light boiling) A full rolling boil began @ 70C (160F) It was at a full boil (could not increase as temperature increased) at 80C (176F) Normally, I think most of the posts here are crazy (but entertaining) but this one is true. I was able to replicate on the other side of the world at sea level. |
