Obama May Get Power To Shut Down Internet Without Court Oversight
January 24, 2011 "Raw Story" -- A bill giving the president an Internet "kill switch" during times of emergency that failed to pass Congress last year will return this year, but with a revision that has many civil liberties advocates concerned: It will give the president the ability to shut down parts of the Internet without any court oversight.

The Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act was introduced last year by Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and Susan Collins (R-ME) in an effort to combat cyber-crime and the threat of online warfare and terrorism.

Critics said the bill would allow the president to disconnect Internet networks and force private websites to comply with broad cybersecurity measures. Future US presidents would have those powers renewed indefinitely.

Well when Obama starts sending all the US dissidents of to the FEMA gulags, they can switch off everyone's internet access and stop word from getting out.

They're not doing this because of a few blogs, but because they want total control of information access and disemination.

Once they have that then they can implement Rex 84 when a suitable pretext presents itself.

Of course, the key phrase is "without court oversight", meaning there won't be any due process involved.

Can't believe Americans are so calm about this.

If you do anything about this now, you won't be able to when TSHTF.

The idea is pretty fail.

They can't shut down websites owned in other countries... and they also can't shut down "The Internet" without having ALL ISPs working together under some sort of act.

That's what they'll do.

Or else switch off the physical infrastructure.

The UK authorities have had a trial run in Scotland & Northern Ireland recently.

I'm pretty sure they've shut off my individual internet at least twice. Once was after i'd written a question to a radio show that was read on air and caused a bit of a disturbance. The host said "we'll shut his internet off", then it went red light for 12 hours.

They're getting desperate, obviously.

This will be their last dying gasp. Just like Hitler taking the whole of Germany down with him, as he spent the last days wandering around in the bunker.

It's not desperation. They're just getting all their final "chess pieces" in position before the lockdown begins.
