As this link demonstrates

Memory is directly related to the physical brain, that is why doctors could lobotomize people to erase their memories. So if you die, and somehow your spirit or soul lives on, how the heck would you even have an identity...it would give me great comfort to believe i will be re-united with my family in a Christian type idea of heaven when I die, but it doesnt seem feasible.

Re: If your memories are stored in your brain...how will you remember who you are in the afterlife?
Maybe that's why they say after you die you are shown your entire life in detail on a big screen, and can even feel what you felt at the time of an incident and how the others around you felt or were affected by what you did or said at the time. Maybe that's the only way we can remember, by some spirit technology of recording everything that ever happened in our life.

Memory is non local in the brain, it does not mean they are not "stored" there. The brain does function like a cloud network.

Re: If your memories are stored in your brain...how will you remember who you are in the afterlife?
Memories are just details used for learning "feelings".

In this life you learn to love... can't learn the feeling of love without experiencing the opposite.

So, your soul 'remembers' strong feelings. If your feelings are misplaced or you haven't learned 'love', you either come back for another lesson or get stuck here attached to some sentimental object you 'love'.

In a nutshell....
The knowledge of the universe, which we are all adding to every day becomes known to us when we pass... details (memories stored in your brain) are trivial and useless.

Memory is all to do with the subconscious, and it is not stored in the brain. It is however "expressed" through the brain, hence why when a part of the brain is damaged people sometimes forget who they are completely, since the damaged brain can't receive the information from the subconscious to remember..

Secondly, you don't remember who you are in the after-life anyway. You aren't even conscious of the fact that you are dead.

You are however re-united with your memories to a certain degree, family members probably will be apart of that, as well everything else that you can think off.
I am, what I am.

yes so either way, if you believe in an afterlife or not, the actual objects of affection will be left behind when the brain rots.

Re: If your memories are stored in your brain...how will you remember who you are in the afterlife?
Meditation may significantly impact brain regions that are associated with memory, sense of self, empathy and stress, according to a study published in the journal Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging.

A team of scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) have found that meditating does not only lend a sense of peace and physical relaxation, but it may also provide cognitive and psychological benefits that persist throughout an individual's day.

"This study demonstrates that changes in brain structure underlie some of these reported improvements and that people are not just feeling better because they are spending time relaxing," said senior author Sara Lazar of the MGH Psychiatric Neuroimaging Research Program.

Images were taken of the brain structure of 16 participants two weeks before and after they enrolled in the eight week-long Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program. These images revealed that their gray-matter density increased in the hippocampus, a region that is important in learning and memory.

The researchers concluded that meditation can improve brain structure, and that such a practice could also ensure mental and emotional well-being.

Memory problems are common among those with Alzheimer's disease, a neurodegenerative disorder that affects more than five million Americans, according to the Alzheimer's Association.
