Arthur Zankel, the financier who gave $10 million for the Carnegie Hall recital space that bears his name, plunged to his death from his ninth floor apartment in an apparent suicide, police said Friday. He was 73.

Zankel, Carnegie Hall´s vice chairman, died Thursday at New York Hospital after apparently jumping from his Fifth Avenue apartment, Detective Noel Waters said, confirming a report in The New York Sun. Waters said Zankel jumped around 11 a.m. Thursday and landed in a rear courtyard.

Zankel, a member of the Citigroup Inc. board of directors from 1986 until last year, specialized in real estate investment through his firm High Rise Capital Management. He served as a co-managing partner of First Manhattan Co. for almost 20 years, until 1997.

His donation helped fund the $100 million venue at Carnegie Hall that opened in 2003. Zankel Hall fulfilled Andrew Carnegie´s original vision for three performance spaces at the complex, offering an intimate venue _ with seats for about 600 compared with 2,804 in the main Isaac Stern auditorium.

Citigroup Chairman Sanford Weill said Zankel (pronounced zan kell´) was an astute adviser _ and his best friend.

``He was the director that really understood the numbers, would quickly be able to dissect the details of a transaction and could catch things that didn´t make a heck of a lot of sense,´´ Weill said in Friday´s editions of the Sun.

Zankel loved that the venue that carried his name brought together musicians from all over the world, said Weill, who is the namesake for Carnegie Hall´s third venue, the 268-seat Joan and Sanford I. Weill Recital Hall.

The construction of Zankel Hall required the digging of more than 6,300 cubic yards of bedrock _ enough to fill 1{ Olympic-size swimming pools. The hall sits about 40 feet below street level, directly under the main auditorium. A remote-control system of lifts, steel trusses and wagons allow artists to rearrange the floor and stage to fit most any performance.

``Arthur Zankel will be remembered as a kind, caring, humorous, brilliant, and wise person,´´ Kenneth Bialkin, who served on the board of directors of Citigroup along with Zankel, told the Sun.

The financier also was a trustee of the Teachers College at Columbia University and a director of White Mountains Insurance Group Ltd.

Survivors include his wife, Judy, and four sons from a previous marriage.

Wim Duisenberg, the former head of the European Central Bank, has been found dead in a pool at his villa in south-east France, French police say.

Police have not yet given a cause for his death, but say he was found on Sunday morning in the town of Faucon.

The former Dutch finance minister was the ECB´s first president, and oversaw the introduction of the single European currency, the euro.

The 70-year-old had stepped down in 2003 after five years in the job.

Under Mr Duisenberg, the euro moved from a market-traded currency to coins and notes in the pockets of people in 12 European countries.

Current ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet called the death a "terrible loss".

´Mr Euro´

Born in 1935, Mr Duisenberg worked for the International Monetary Fund before serving as his country´s finance minister from 1973 and 1977.

A member of the Dutch Socialist Party, his views on responsible economic management changed. Later in life, he preferred strong fiscal discipline rather than a strategy of promoting growth through major public spending.

Germany and France - the two biggest eurozone economies - wrangled over Mr Duisenberg´s appointment in 1998, and over who should succeed him.

Mr Duisenberg became first ECB president with strong German backing - with Mr Trichet being named as his successor at the same time as part of a Franco-German deal to share power.

The shift to euro notes and coins took place on 1 January 2002, and was feted with firework displays and street parties in some European cities.

The ECB cut interest rates in the euro countries to their lowest level since the World War II under Mr Duisenberg.

But critics said the slowdown in the eurozone would not have been so severe if he had cut rates sooner and more aggressively.

Israelis are worse than Nazis, says Duisenberg´s wife

Gretta Duisenberg, wife of the European Central Bank president, triggered a storm of outrage yesterday when she said the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories was worse than the Nazis´ tyranny over the Netherlands during the Second World War.

Mrs Duisenberg made the comments after visiting the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, last week as the head of Stop the Occupation, a pro-Palestinian lobby group.

She told the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad that Hitler´s forces had behaved better than the Israeli government "with the exception of the Holocaust".

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre, which fights anti-Semitism throughout the world, yesterday accused her of "besmirching the memory" of Anne Frank, the Jewish girl diarist who hid for two years in an Amsterdam attic, before being caught and sent to the gas chambers.

Mrs Duisenberg´s comments were also condemned by the Dutch prime minister, Jan Peter Balkenende, and appear to break the ultimate taboo in Dutch politics....

WIM DUISENBERG, the president of the European Central Bank, is the most powerful man in Europe, at least among men without troops. His decisions affect the economic future of 300 million Europeans; 20 percent of the world´s goods and services are produced in the currency zone over which he presides. He is responsible for the success or failure of Europe´s monetary union, a project that is at once the essence and the emblem of Europe´s renunciation of fratricide and its reinvention as a continent united in peaceful cooperation. A pillar of the European establishment, he is the public face of the euro and, by virtue of this role, the public face of Europe. His nickname, in fact, is Mr. Euro.

Wim Duisenberg´s wife, Gretta, is a woman of profound conviction, especially where Israel and the Jews are concerned. On April 13, 2001, demonstrators in Amsterdam took to the streets in support of the Palestinians. Carrying signs equating Ariel Sharon with Hitler, members of the mob--clad as Hamas militants--brandished swastikas, burned Israeli flags, beat a Jewish bystander, and howled for the return of the gas chambers. After marching in the demonstration, Mrs. Euro hung a PLO flag from the balcony of her house in Amsterdam. This elicited concern; the European Central Bank is independent and non-political. "You must hold me responsible for the flag and not Wim," she told journalists. Wim may be the most powerful man in Europe, but it seems he is not the master of his own house.

The Duisenbergs´ neighbor, a Jewish physician and member of the city council, asked her to remove the banner. Mrs. Duisenberg refused. The neighbor reports that Mrs. Euro harangued her with a lecture: Israel victimizes the Palestinians because it receives support from "rich American Jews." American presidents, under the thrall of a powerful Jewish lobby, "have to do whatever the Jews want."

In June, Mrs. Duisenberg founded "Stop the Occupation," an organization that calls for the imposition of economic sanctions on Israel. A Dutch radio interviewer asked Mrs. Duisenberg how many signatures she hoped to collect on a petition of support for the group. "Six million," she replied, chuckling heartily at her own joke. Subsequently, she denied the comment´s obvious implication: The number six million, she said, just popped unbidden into her head.

In January, she toured the West Bank and Gaza, beginning her trip on the very day 23 people were killed in simultaneous suicide bombings in Tel Aviv. She had "understanding" for the action, she told Dutch television. She placed responsibility for the attack firmly on Ariel Sharon: He has to "stop all that violence." In Ramallah, she met Yasser Arafat. Photographs depict them staring dreamily into each other´s eyes; they are holding hands. They appear to be rapturously in love. Mrs. Duisenberg announced to the attendant press corps that Arafat "hates killing"; the Palestinian leader is "absolutely against" suicide bombings: "He even told me that yesterday he prevented two attempts!"

To enter the territories, Mrs. Duisenberg--"Her Excellency," as Arafat obligingly refers to her--used the Dutch diplomatic passport granted to her thanks to her husband´s position, provoking a rebuke from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, since diplomatic passports issued to civil servants and their spouses are to be used only on official business. She has dismissed criticism of this abuse of her status as "ludicrous," an attempt to deflect attention from the real issue, Israeli cruelty that "knows no bounds." Speaking in Jenin, she remarked that "this wall that Israel is building, is many times worse than the Berlin wall. It is terrible. It is much higher and goes over land that was taken from the Palestinians."...
