Mesquite Council mourns death of councilwoman

LAS VEGAS (CNN) - Emotions ran high at the Mesquite Council meeting Tuesday while members and residents mourned the death of a city councilwoman who died in an apparent murder-suicide.

"Today's tragedy has presented this community with terrible sorrow," said Mesquite Mayor, Susan Holecheck.

Before her untimely death, Donna Fairchild faced possible sanctions regarding a $94 travel voucher for a trip she didn't take and a comment she made about the Nevada Development Authority.

Fairchild never made it to Tuesday's meeting.

Mesquite police said Fairchild and her husband, Bill, were found dead in their home at 4 a.m. Tuesday, each with a single gunshot wound to the head.
