***Social Security fund will be drained by 2037 ***
Social Security's finances are getting worse as the economy struggles to recover and millions of baby boomers stand at the brink of retirement.

New congressional projections show Social Security running deficits every year until its trust funds are eventually drained in about 2037.

This year alone, Social Security is projected to collect $45 billion less in payroll taxes than it pays out in retirement, disability and survivor benefits, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said Wednesday. That figure swells to $130 billion when a new one-year cut in payroll taxes is included, though Congress has promised to repay any lost revenue from the tax cut.

The massive retirement program has been feeling the effects of a struggling economy for several years. The program first went into deficit last year, but the CBO said at the time that Social Security would post surpluses for a few more years before permanently slipping into deficits in 2016.

The outlook, however, has grown bleaker as the nation struggles to recover from the worst economic crisis since Social Security was enacted during the Great Depression. In the short term, Social Security is suffering from a weak economy that has payroll taxes lagging and applications for benefits rising. In the long term, Social Security will be strained by the growing number of baby boomers retiring and applying for benefits.

The deficits add a sense of urgency to efforts to improve Social Security's finances. For much of the past 30 years, Social Security has run big surpluses, which the government has borrowed to spend on other programs. Now that Social Security is running deficits, the federal government will have to find money elsewhere to help pay for retirement, disability and survivor benefits.

"It means that Social Security is increasingly adding to our long-term fiscal problem, and it's happening now," said Eugene Steuerle, a former Treasury official who is now a fellow at the Urban Institute think tank.

It's a bad time for the nation to be hit with more financial problems. The federal budget deficit will surge to a record $1.5 trillion flood of red ink this year, congressional budget experts estimated Wednesday, blaming the slow economic recovery and a tax cut law enacted in December.

A debt commission appointed by President Barack Obama has recommended a series of changes to improve Social Security's finances, including a gradual increase in the full retirement age, lower cost-of-living increases and a gradual increase in the threshold on the amount of income subject to the Social Security payroll tax.

There is no money in it now... just BS bonds...

But the Federal Govt will do what it will do for everything, just print it up. The last thing to fail and I mean the LAST will be Social Security...

Let SS fail and it is guaranteed revolution within days.

It would be a "walker and cane" attack of massive force... ;)

I guess I was trying to look at things from a positive way, but hell I agree there is nothing there. The checks will keep going out until the elections in 2012 and then all hell will start.I realize many years ago,it was nothing but a scam and when it was my time to be able to collect, that it would be gone. Everything the government does goes to hell.

They need to stop giving it to all these other people (kids who are a little slow in school, widows, children of deceased, etc.) and keep it for the extreme elderly (70 years+) who make less than $30,000 per year.

They need to stop taking it out of our pay checks. My father pass away when I was 4 and my Mother at the time was not working because back then Moms could stay home. He was killed on the job which did nothing for us. With the SS my Mom was able to buy a home for us and go to work and support her kids without food-stamps and any help from the government. So I do not believe (kids who are a little slow in school, widows, children of deceased, etc.) are the problem.

I think they add to the problem. This, and people who retire and start drawing at 62. Most people at 62 are still healthy and able to work just as young widows are(look at all the single moms out there working their butts off and not getting extra because their isn't a spouse). It was probably necessary years ago, but not today. People need to have life insurance. Kids who have speech impediments or are a little slow aren't in the workforce so why are we paying them money? And then, there is all the fraud in disability income - too sick to work but not to golf - that is huge. It's so sad to see old people who have worked their entre lives and now they have nothing because medical issues have eaten away at their savings. I can't even imagine what it's going to be like when the Boomers get to the really old and helpless stage and there is no savings and their kids are working 60 hour weeks at crap jobs and can't take care of them. This is not going to be pretty. Cuts have to start being made somewhere and they should come first from the young and healthy.

I do agree with you. Our situation was long, long time ago.lol
They for sure need to raise the age and there is going to have to be some very tough cuts. But either way, it is a no win situation. I know of people that are taking advantage of the situation and it pisses me off.

"They need to stop taking it out of our pay checks."

They've been talking about the system going broke for decades now and nobody likes it taken out of their checks. Heck, the Baby Boomers complained years ago that they wouldn't see any of it when they got old and the government was giving it to all these old people who had hardly paid in a dime but were receiving benefits because they reached that magic retirement age. So really, we started in the hole on this program and then we began adding more and more people to the rolls figuring there were so many Boomers around who would fund it. Well now the Boomers are getting up there in age and there aren't enough young workers to fund them, yet they have paid their entire lives into the system. And the Generations X & Y will get shafted even more. So, you suggest we stop deducting it from checks because it won't be there for you and you don't want to pay - who will pay for those who were forced to contribute their entire lives and are now stuck holding the empty bag? In other words, so long as it's not you, you don't care? You don't care that old people suffer - no, don't answer that as I know you do. I had that same attitude back in my 20's, but the older I get and the more I see a need, the more I think differently. We could all use that extra money we pay in, but I think old people probably need it more. I just don't know what to do about the situation. I wish there was an easy fix.

I do care and I pay every year a large sum as I have a small business. I care very much for the elderly. I believe in karma and I can not stand to see and hear about what the state nursing homes are doing to the elderly. It saddens me very much where we as a nation are headed.I have elderly relatives and without SS I do not know where they would be. When I say stop taking it out of our checks it is more or less just been more angry at the government. But I do know this, if I had been given the choice on what to do with my SS more on a private sector as others, I think people might be better off. Wish I knew the answers.

Insurance industry - that's a dirty word. They are as bad as the banks - and have powerful enough lobby systems that they get whatever they want. Kind of off the subject, but I got my 6 month renewal from Allstate the other day. On the recap bill they listed a $200+ charge spread over 6 months if we paid in installments. A few days later, we got the first bill which had an additional $3.50 fee for installments, but they had hidden the $200+ into the payment, so unless you were observant enough to read/notice it on the initial recap, you were screwed. I looked back at the old bills and they didn't do this - only a $3.50 monthly fee, so it's something new - in my state anyway. I wasn't really that thrilled about having to write out an $1800 check to cover six months at once (we have kids insured on our policy which is why it is so high) to avoid a $250 installment fee. They are really trying to pull one over on their policy holders.
