Post office is going to start closing 2000 offices.

How many thousands of workers will that be?

[link to www.foxnews.com]

Even if there were only 10 workers in each office that is 20,000 jobs gone.
 Quoting: FatalWishes

OMG another 20,000
you are right fatal wishes
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 659511

Most of those will likely be transferred to other locations. When you close post office A, that puts more work on post office B, so post office B will take post office A's former employees. Most of this restructuring is to get rid of excess overhead and older buildings that are needing work, not really to get rid of employees. Although, IMO, about half of the ones I know really do need to go. Grumpy and slow.

My 11 year old asked me the other night if we were heading into the next Great Depression. I never discuss these types of things with her, but she's picking up on it somewhere. Kids know more than we give them credit for. This is the same one that mentioned the moon seemed to be fuller longer this month. Very astute.

I wonder how many of these layoffs are seasonal, though, and are expected by the employees (who should be prepared for them). I know I just laid off over 150 people, but it's the nature of the business. They work 6 months out of the year, but make far more than most people who work 12 months of the year make. When you look at it that way, is it really a lay off? It's like saying teachers are laid off in the summer.

This just shows that you can't count on other people to provide you with a job and a livelihood. Those who are unemployed should look into starting their own small businesses! There has never been a better time to be your own boss. This is still the land of opportunity -- you just have to get up off your ass and make it happen!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 744402

Full of it you are! Tried to start my own small business a few years ago, but it failed! Why? Big Business controls the marketplace! Couldn't buy inventory for the same price that larger businesses could! They got lower prices because they bought in bulk. Had to pay $200.00 for an item, but they only payed $150.00 for the same item because the sellers of the item offered to them for less if they bought in bulk. Not a level playing field at all!

There is alot more too that. If it was just cashiers losing jobs, then it would be alot better.
Everyone is getting affected and its pretty sad!

The original poster had the right idea, but you so correct with not a level playing field.

People need to take their ideas to the next level. Forget quantity, make quality.
If your product is the best available, then eventually people will pay the extra to buy from you.

Re: **** MORE BAD NEWS**** LOOK WHO IS GETTING FIRED, CLOSED DOWN ..... OMG LOOK AT THEM ADD THEM ALL UP !!!!!!!
well gee I thought Obama said the economy was picking up?

fed government takes in 6 billion per day spends 10
unemployment rate is actually 11%

Sears closing over 100 Kmart and sears stores.. that outta hurt

People stop believing those slimmy democrats the economy is not just stagnant it is like slug. Once the holiday employees are let go there goes the unemployment rate even higher.

While your all struggling to figure out how to protect you and yours future, your finances.. remember this !!! Pelousi is spending 10,000 per night on a room in Hawaii.. she and her husband are celebrating the huge profits from a credit card bill she saw get passed which allowed she and her hubby to make millions!!!!!!!!! When she drains the swamp I assume she meant people like her would be going???

Yeah right, obama said we are going to get more jobs that the government will creating(sarcasm)...

your right it would be better if he was more pessimistic and we all just gave up now right?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 404824

No not pessimistic but realistic. Where will they come from? What new technologies? Where are the areas of demand? What would you advise h.s. and college students to major in?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 907170

The numbers will continue to climb and the standard of living fall. This isn't rocket science. The offshoring of industries is decimating not only the US but other Western economies as well.

The "projections" are that wages should go down about 50% before stability is reached. We have a long way to go.
