Re: Tropical Cyclone Anthony to hit Queensland coast Jan30- 31:Possible Cat3
Cyclone Anthony could intensify from a category one to a category three storm and hit the Burdekin Coast, between Cardwell and Bowen, on Monday, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) says.

Meanwhile, it's feared a tropical low about 1500km northeast of Vanuatu could build into a category four cyclone and hit north of Gladstone on Thursday.

"In a worst-case scenario, Queensland could see two tropical cyclones cross the coast in a matter of three or four days," Ms Bligh told reporters in Brisbane.

The premier admitted the BoM advice was grim news as the state was trying to recovering from heavy rains and damaging floods.

"We're battening down the hatches once more, but we hope both these weather formations disappear out at sea somewhere," she said.

"But on all current modelling, the bureau's best advice is that both of these cyclones will cross the Queensland coast next week, and we have to be ready for that possibility."

Ms Bligh said the BoM was more concerned about the second system, which was likely to be named Yasi by the Fijian government.

It likely to bring substantial rainfall and possibly more flooding across the state.

Ms Bligh urged people to remain calm, but to be prepared and secure their property.

A cyclone watch issued on Friday for communities between Cairns and Bowen is likely to be upgraded to a warning on Saturday.

Ms Bligh will hold a meeting with the state disaster management group at the emergency services headquarters in Brisbane at 5pm (AEST) on Friday.

Deputy police commissioner Ian Stewart has been reappointed as the state disaster coordinator.

He said there was no need for panic buying, but people should make sure they are prepared.

"I'm asking people to stock up on essential items," Mr Stewart told reporters in Brisbane.

"Make sure there's fuel in vehicles."

Rains brought by Cyclone Tasha, a category one system that crossed the Queensland coast on Christmas Day last year, led to flooding in an area the size of France and Germany.

O no a cyclone this time of year

So what made you decide the one predicted to hit Townsville is going to be more drastic than the one predicted to hit perth/bunbury sunday?

B. TROPICAL DISTURBANCE SUMMARY:
(1) THE AREA OF CONVECTION PREVIOUSLY LOCATED NEAR 18.4S
157.8E IS NOW LOCATED NEAR 15.7S 153.3E, APPROXIMATELY 435 NM EAST
OF CAIRNS, AUSTRALIA. THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN SLOW TO RE-CONSOLIDATE
DESPITE IMPROVED UPPER LEVEL CONDITIONS. AN UPPER LEVEL RIDGE AXIS
HAS REPLACED A TROUGH ALOFT AS FORECAST. AS A RESULT VERTICAL WIND
SHEAR HAS RELAXED CONSIDERABLY ALLOWING FOR DEEP CONVECTION TO
DEVELOP OVER THE CENTER. THE UPPER TROPOSPHERE IS ALSO HIGHLY
DIFFLUENT WHICH HAS HELPED TO SUSTAIN THIS DEEP CONVECTION. THE
CONVECTION IS ALSO GETTING A BOOST DIURNALLY. A PARTIAL 271113Z
ASCAT PASS VALIDATES REISSUANCE OF THIS PRODUCT AS WELL WITH SURFACE
WINDS APPROACHING 30 KNOTS ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE LOW LEVEL
CIRCULATION CENTER. RECENT MICROWAVE IMAGERY HIGHLIGHTS A DEARTH OF
CONVECTIVE BANDING. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED SURFACE WINDS ARE ESTIMATED AT
25 TO 30 KNOTS. MINIMUM SEA LEVEL PRESSURE IS ESTIMATED TO BE NEAR
998 MB. THE POTENTIAL FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SIGNIFICANT TROPICAL
CYCLONE WITHIN THE NEXT 24 HOURS REMAINS GOOD.

I guess this isn't news until it fucks things up... it could also turn out to be a weak cyclone but still have a huge amount of rain with it creating similar conditions to the floods earlier this month.

Queensland battens down ahead of cyclone

Cyclone Anthony is predicted to cross the coast early on Monday morning.

Towns in north Queensland are on high alert for the second time in just over a month as a tropical cyclone sweeps closer to the coast.

At 4:00am today (AEST), category one Cyclone Anthony was 910 kilometres east-north-east of Townsville and 810 kilometres east-north-east of Bowen.

It is predicted to cross the coast between Ayr and Bowen late tomorrow or early on Monday.

Weather bureau spokesman David Grant says the system is forecast to intensify and a cyclone watch is in place from Innisfail to St Lawrence, and adjacent inland areas.

"With that we'd probably expect winds getting up to around the 100 kilometres-an-hour mark with some possibly damaging gusts in that," he said.

"[The cyclone watch] extends our range of other possibilities for coastal crossing and damaging gales associated with the system."

The damaging wind gusts should develop along coastal and island parts tomorrow.

Townsville Mayor Les Tyrell says they are preparing for the potentially damaging system.

"Wind gusts that would bring trees down and would bring powerlines down and certainly will bring some rain with it," he said.

He says crews are cleaning the city of debris and other loose items that may cause damage in the cyclonic conditions.

The state's disaster management group was activated in December in response to tropical cyclone Tasha, which crossed the coast south of Cairns on Christmas Day.

Deputy Police Commissioner Ian Stewart says the situation is worrying because forecasters are predicting a tropical low off Fiji could develop into a category four or five cyclone next week.

"The modelling for that event has indicated that it may form into a cyclone and may ultimately move toward the Australian and in particular Queensland area," he said.

"So we are concerned Queensland may be impacted by these two weather events only days apart.

"We know the area is quite saturated so this will have certainly a significant impact if it strikes land in the next couple of days."

Deputy Commissioner Stewart says residents in the danger zone need to be prepared.

"I'd be asking people to think about stocking up on essential items, but there is no need for panic buying," he said.

"Make sure they have fuel in their vehicles, items in their yards and around their houses that could become missiles are put away or tied down."

Meanwhile, authorities along the south-west coast of Western Australia are preparing for possible damage from Cyclone Bianca*.

The weather bureau says there is a significant risk that Bianca, a category three system, could maintain tropical cyclone intensity as it approaches the coast early on Sunday.

Forecasters have issued a cyclone watch for coastal areas from Jurien Bay to Albany, including Perth, Bunbury and Busselton.

The Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre expects the cyclone to weaken significantly before crossing the coast but says residents should prepare for wind gusts of up to 120 kilometres-an-hour, heavy rain and possible localised flooding.

But Bianca is not expected to be as bad as Cyclone Alby, which killed five people in 1978.

Not too fussed about it all...might lose power and some yard items but meh. Last one we had crossed about 2.00 am IIRC and the tree in back yard fell against the house. I'd only gotten to sleep 10 mins earlier and the missus wakes me up freaking about the tree.

I asked her if it pierced any walls or broke any windows and she said no so I asked if she expected me to go out and start cutting it up to which she said no aagain. Good I reckons and rolled over and went back to sleep. Flamin' drama queen she was.

Still rather weak and unformed but the in-feed band now getting moisture into the centre from up near New Guinea...Outflow channel runs for nearly 1500 kilometres to the south east. Strengthening with some rapid forming convection tonight into what will look a lot more like a Cat1-2 TC .The possible Cat3 is not that likely due to the presence of dry air due to a weakening upper low ... Slow moving with a lot of warm water so Cat3 is still possible, we will see what happens over the next 24 hrs .

This Geostationary Satellite link from the Bianca thread shows Anthony and the TD behind it and now I am wondering if there's a possibility of Anthony slowing down even more and hovering off the coast while the Tropical Depression behind it speeds up and takes it over forming some sort of supercyclone
