Believe it or not, as bizarre as this might sound, to this day, the voice chat that still had the most features was one from the 1990s, Mplayer / HearMe

[link to upload.wikimedia.org]

Voice chat was on HearMe of Mplayer.com.

when you keyed up the mic, your avatar showed up and big colored meter that worked excellent.

The three tabs were Gallery, Web and Draw

on the draw tab you could draw like MS paint and others would see it or draw too

on the web tab youd see whatever webpage the moderator set it too

moderation could be handed down and people could get in line to be the next moderator

the moderator would set it to 60 second time limit or infinite talk time

Profiles would accept HTML code, like myspace did years later.

The program had black background and a much more focused feel to it generated by the aesthetics of the GUI.

HearMe folded when Mplayer was sold in 2000.

Scroll Lock was the key up key and Scroll lock shift locked the mic down.

If you talk to anyone who was on here during those days, 1997 to 2000, theyll all be nostalgic about it and tell you it was the best chat ever

although GLP voice chat has something interesting going on with discussion of important topics and is the first conspiracy forum to get a voice chat !

PalTalk is garbage compared to how this was

also the black background of this GUI and other visual attributes of it made a big difference in the mood and focus of the chats, it had a psychological impact.

Thought the voice chat developers would find this interesting

thats about it, now to let this thread die.

Yahoo! voice chat used to be pretty awesome. The "Fight Room" was truly amazing at times (Friday & Saturday nights, mostly).

Mplayer was probably one of the best multiplayer gaming communities I have ever used. This is back in the days of quake and the original team fortress which was developed for quake.

The gaming community was robust and you actually got to know each other because it also had that avatar chat side to it and you could play multiple games. Guess I still prefer it over steam.

When I played on mplayer, the community felt more like an mmorpg, instead of just a multiplayer game launcher like steam.
