Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano announced significant changes to the nation’s security measures in the first State of America’s Homeland Security address. One of the more noteworthy alterations is a discontinuation of the Bush administration’s color-coded terror alert system.

Officials plan to replace the old system with the new National Terrorism Advisory System.

Under the new system, certain terror threats will be communicated to specific people; if agencies wish to alert the public about a threat, they will release an announcement and allow news media and other social networks to broadcast it.
