Get Internet Access When Your Government Shuts It Down

after Hurricane Katrina there was NO phone service of any kind, not home phones, nor cell phones. I am still stumped about this but it is a fact. Even the local police could not communicate to each other, something weird was afoot then, I still think that whole thing was a test

Whatever it was I think Hurricane Katrina shows us that we need to be prepared.

Im on Janeys Egyptian protest thread and what it shows me is that us people can be so resourseful and community does exist even when it doesnt appear so.

Having internet and phone access during crisis is so important and I hope that we can live and learn from Hurricane Katrina and Egypt.

Get a short-wave radio and twist the dial for ham radio operators. Get a World Band Radio book. Get a short-wave radio even if it is used, if it works.

I just envision a network of people in their "command centers" in their basements all chatting to one another.

It's a good idea. It's like a citywide local area network made from as much wifi routers as there are close enough to each other. It would work in big cities where enough people living close to each other install the program that opens their wifi routers to this adhoc network.

got my amateur radio license. if they ever did shut down internet and phone comms your local ham will become one of the few sources for long distance communication.

Do you know how to operate one? When SHTF it's going to be a little late to run down to walmart and pick one up. I'm just saying, it'd be a valuable tool and it'd be best to be prepared to use that tool effectively.
