I'm female and 60. I had gout all of 2009. My mom had it in her later life and now I have it and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I tried to take the Alpurinol(sp?) but couldn't tolerate it. I had to use crutches to walk for part of the time I had it. Took a year of a complete change of diet to finally get it under some control. Drink only water. Learn to love salads and baked potatoes and cut out anything acidic, yeast, or meat. I ate cooked cabbage and cornbread for a lot of my meals. I'm a southern cook and nothing about the diet was exciting for me, but it was the only solution for me. My doctor recently gave me a prescription for colchicine 0.6 mg. You take one tablet every 1/2 hour up to 10 tablets or diarrhea. He said I wouldn't make it up to 10 tablets, but promised it would get rid of the gout almost instantly. I haven't yet had to try it and hope that I don't have to.
