The bright flash was an electric discharge caused by a short circuit, which switched off the field pulling down the ball lightning, causing it to accelerate up into the air because its electric charge experiences an upward force due to the natural electric field operating between the earth and the electrically charged clouds. The fields generated by the huge generators counteracted this, pulling it down, but once the fields disappeared due to the discharge, the ball lightning flew upwards.
